Some say that the monument to the defenders of Girona was initially intended as a monument to the defenders of the city of Zaragoza . Anyway, this work won a second class medal in a national exhibition and Ferran Puig i Gibert bought it to give it to the city of Girona, where it arrived on August 30, 1894 . The inauguration took place only in the presence of the Captain General of Catalonia , ValeriĂ  Weyler and given to the monument honors of Captain General, on October 28, 1894. In 1944 when the pavement of the square was redone, the pedestal and rose to about 60 cm.
The Monument to the Defenders of Girona 1808-1809 is a sculpture of the municipality of Girona included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia . On an almost parallelepipedal pedestal of stone from Girona , with ornamental elements, there is a group of bronze sculptures made up of three characters representing the defenders of Girona during the War with the French in the years 1808-1809.

Nestled next to the Tourist info place on the Rambla, it's easy to miss this odd little monument to the murdered journalist. Google his name for all the info:)
There is another monument honouring him near the air raid shelter and playground near the Wall access at Placa de Jacint Verdauger I Santaio. The statue there is a bronze of a plaster done in 1939, bronzed in 2009, 70 years since the journo Carles was murdered. Interesting that you can get the statue, the medieval wall and a childrens' playground all In the same photo. I have included photos from the second location that are linked to the first monument.

This wall decoration stands in tribute to James I, who was King of Aragon between 1213 and 1276. Also known by his sobriquet of James the Conqueror, he left a legacy of an enlarged kingdom as well as his patronage of art, learning, and literature.

This is an odd little monument. It looks more like a plaque or an architectural sculpture and depicts a knight on horseback holding a lance. The knight is also dressed anachronistically in a Corinthian Helmet. Were it not for the words Jaume I written in relief underneath the monument, I'd have no idea what this was.

The sculpture can be easy to missing is it's right on the corner of Gran Vis de Jaume I, on the facade of the building, next to Cajamar bank.

It’s a superb depiction in sculptured stone of life’s stages. Resting on a granite plinth the almost 6.5 metre high monument is captivating.

At the bottom is shown a figure of childhood with arm outstretched, longing to grow up. Next is adulthood. Again with outstretched arms, symbolising aspiring to be older.

Finally at the apex are a couple of older people, close together, finally having reached serene old age.

For the younger figures their arms extend through and encircle the stone. An image of embracing life.

It was created by Ramon Casellas Albert and unveiled with great fanfare in 1979. Located in a little park in front of the Station, it is well worthy of admiration.
