This basilica should be one of your “must do” visits in Marseille. The views from its base show the full 360° panorama of Marseille, the Mediterranean and the hinterland, totally unimpeded. It is one of the highest points in the area, so getting there in 35° heat does need to be taken into account. Once inside, the crypt and the main basilica are open to view, however, regardless of personal beliefs, a standard of dress must be worn, so beachwear is not appropriate and you may be turned away at the door. Both the crypt and the basilica are beautifully ordained and the theme of the sea runs clearly across the memorials, icons and pictures. The best way to reach the basilica is via the Petit Train which can be taken from the Vieux Port and Will take you directly up the 500ft hike.
