What travellers are saying
- Patti KBellevue, WA45 contributionsThe staff there welcomed us warmly and gave us a brief history tour, then let us roam freely. This place is very old, one of the earliest monastaries in Ireland. One of the docents looked up my family ancestry names in a book for me. She was extremely helpful.Written 28 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Lia MProvince of Munster, Ireland188 contributionsLovely, peaceful, clean, pretty place. Great for walks, relaxing, yoga, exercise, day out with the family or kids. Walking trails, old castle ruins, lake. Really nice placeWritten 10 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Hugh B2 contributionsWell worth a visit - artifacts from ancient clare - old farming implements -fossils etc. Very well laid out & identified. Aural history sections very well thought out. Over 2 floors & lift available. Spacious & roomy & staff available to answer any questions but really, the displays say it all in themselves.Lovely setting and all free. Can call to the hotel next door for a snack (all the previous grounds of the Sister's Of Mercy convent) where the wooden surrounds are definitely worth looking at in the restaurant.Written 1 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland8,426 contributionsCkare Abbey is well worth your time if you are in the Ennis area. It's a short drive from Ennis centre but it's well signposted. The road has been realigned due to the more recent motorway and bypass but trust the signs abd they'll lead you straight to the small car park at the Abbey.
It's free to enter and the place is so peaceful. It dates from the 12th centuryand was an Augustinian Abbey.
Its walls are pretty much all intact although ir is roofless. Some lovely window frames, headstones and crosses.Written 23 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - PaulaGalvinKildare, Ireland668 contributionsWe were here for the wonderful Book Festival, and it was great to be part of it! - lucyboo87Miltown Malbay, Ireland1,411 contributionsLots of different events to suit all the family. Well organised with plenty staff around also. Can get very crowded so may not be for everyone.Written 13 September 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland8,426 contributionsThe Daniel O'Connell statue towers over central Ennis, a fitting figure to commemorate, the Catholic emancipator or "liberator" who ran for parliament in this constituency. He was the first Catholic to sit in Westminster for a couple of generations and was central to the repeal of the penal laws that discriminated so severely against Catholics throughout the 17th century.
He stands high on a column and is well worth a stop.Written 24 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - МарияSt. Petersburg, Russia19 contributionsSaw this by chance when drive near and were so impressed by this beautiful abbey. - lotharjuernWeston, FL2,557 contributionsDid not know that former Cassius Clay and then Muhammad Ali has some family ties to Ireland. Good for him.Written 3 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- BridgetHGCork, Ireland45 contributionsHappened to be in Ennis on Culture Night and as advertised went along to a most entertaining and informative evening at the De Valera Library where users of the library and members of book clubs gave great accounts of what the library and books mean to them. A wonderfully eclectic mix of readers, topics and authors. A really good idea and has given me new authors to check out and old ones to return to. Well done to all involved.Written 26 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Michael MEnnis, Ireland112 contributionsHeard the song more years ago than I care to remember. Didn't think the place was actually real. Visiting here is FREE. It is only a four cross roads on the main road to Tulla/Scarriff East.
Somebody is caring for the place as it appears reasonably well kept. It appears also the local community are active in promoting the place as a local told us there is a local walk planned leading people to all the places mentioned in the song. There has been some plaques errected in places but we didnt see them.
The song has been credited to a local man Robbie McMahon now passed away but a small stone structure has been put up in his honour.
The local man also described to us "the craic" of the few days of the fair that still takes place here every June 23rd. He was very entertaining and I think we were lucky to meet him as it added to the experience of our visit which to be honest would have been very lack lustre without him.
We were glad we visited, glad it was free and can now say Been there ,Done that, tick box.Written 22 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Sandra H225 contributionsWe booked the VIP Hike to Cliffs of Moher (from Doolin) for just the four of us. Needless to say this activity was the HIGHLIGHT of our two week trip to Ireland. If we would have just driven to the cliffs it would have not been the same. The pod waiting for us with an entire array of cheeses, crackers, fruit, etc., was mind blowing. The presentation was incredible. Our hike was challenging. It was very windy, and at times kind of scary, but what GREAT memories! I'm bringing another group next year to take this same tour!Written 25 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Liz3917671 contributionThis experience was a highlight of our trip to Ireland. Our group ranged in riding experience, from highly experienced to zero experience (me). We all had an incredible time. Even though it was my first time ever riding a horse, I always felt safe. The horses were very patient & staff were always nearby. The ride was peaceful & views were incredible. We saw a fairy fort!Written 21 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
