Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- JVtravelbearBoston, MA129 contributionsWe purchase tickets but didn’t do the guided tour. It was fun to explore this ancient castle. The views of the city were beautiful on such a clear day. You have to take a wander around the grounds.Written 6 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lauren9 contributionsSuch a lovely thing to do! You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to be able to reach the top, you can do the walk quite easily at your own pace. We had so much fun and it felt like an achievement to reach the top! So many amazing views! No costs involved, nature is free as it should be! 💚Written 4 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CraigBournemouth, UK1 contributionThis museum is incredible. It covers so many different topics that there is surely something for everyone. I'm honestly surprised that the museum is free! I've paid to go into museums with fewer things.
You could quite easily spend a whole day in the museum if you were to check out everything they have.
The roof terrace is worth a visit, some great views across the cityscape.Written 9 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sarah H9 contributionsLovely and atmospheric. Large amount of tourist shops which all sell the same thing but still gorgeous. Can’t wait to return and would love to get a hotel here as we stayed in the new town last time.Written 18 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim MHellertown, PA277 contributionsWhat I found most interesting of the Royal Mile was the architecture. The stone buildings and cobblestone streets of the upper section provide a step back into history. The Royal Mile begins at the Edinburgh Castle Promenade and travels downhill for approximately 1 mile ending up at Holyroodhouse Palace. About halfway down the hill the Royal Mile is open to traffic in both directions. Unfortunately, most of the shops located on the upper half are now filled with souvenir shops. There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and pubs on the upper section to satisfy most peoples culinary and financial tastes. The chases, closes, and wynds are unique and interesting to explore as you discover many hidden pubs, cafes, shops, and courtyards. Working your way downhill you pass St. Giles Cathedral and Edinburgh City Hall. In my opinion, the lower half of the Royal Mile is less interesting to explore. At the very bottom of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament building. In summary, the Royal Mile is a great way to spend several hours exploring the Old Town area. The walk offers a little bit of everything when exploring Edinburgh.Written 4 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim MHellertown, PA277 contributionsClimbing to the peak of Calton Hill is well worth the effort. I was pleasantly surprised when I reached the top. The are numerous museums, monuments, and towers to explore and the well manicured grounds cover 22 acres. The 260 degree views are spectacular, including; the King's Throne, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street, out to the Firth of Forth and beyond. Although I did not see for myself, Calton Hill offers a picturesque view of the city at sunset (and later to view the city lights and stars above.Written 4 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - john6101953Dudley, UK390 contributionsWe have wanted to go to the Tattoo for a long time and finally decided to go, we were not disappointed.
The most amazing experience is a great setting
All those taking part were excellent and the complete show was brilliant
The only negative was the items being sold before the Tattoo started, they were extortionate prices, for example a cagoule that would coast £4/5 was £15
The programmes however were well priced at £10 and are excellent quality
