Booked the Ocean train trip, departing from Montreal at 19.00 and arriving in Halifax the following day evening around 18.50.
We actually had this travel booked before COVID, so this trip was a postponed trip and hence only able to do it in June 2022.
We had a sleeper plus cabin.
Let's start with the actual train and cabin. The train had no dome car for the journey and also no day seating. So we were forced to spend the day viewing seating within out sleeper cars. The sleeper cabins are OK with a bunk bed which are comfortable, a toilet with shower room, which is also ok. The day layout actually provides a bench seat, that is not really designed for real seating and the window view is limited.
So not having either a dome car or even a day seating car was a big disappointment.
The restaurant car was all ok. We had dinner when we left Montreal, and breakfast the following morning and also lunch. The meals were all very good , with both dinner and lunch being 3 courses. Soft drinks are included, however one buys ones wine which was all ok.
Also as we had no day car, after each meal we had to go back to our 'cell' sleeping cabin to sit. There was no trolly service so if one wanted a coffee, one had to ring for the attendant, whom when available would turn up, take your order, somewhat begrudgingly but one did get a coffee.
All in all, from what VIA state as a classic train ride, for us turned out to be just a cell ride with food provided, and not a classic in any way.
So not really one that I would say is a must to do.
VIA could do a lot better to improve the service.
