Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Myself and a friend visited on a weekday in February 2024.

We took a taxi (Taksi Jari Kaari) from Luosto to the Park and purchased our pre-booked tickets in the wooden Kopara Lodge adjacent to the car park. Then a 400 metre walk for the reindeer sledge. There were two reindeer ‘caravans’ during our visit and we had a sleigh each. It was a relaxing 30 minute ride on the snow through woodlands at walking pace. After the reindeer ride walked back to the Lodge via the Reindeer Trail where we could see reindeer at close hand and feed reindeer (mushroom pellets supplied). Food, drink and reindeer souvenirs can be purchased at the Lodge. We got the same taxi back to Luosto. In all, a brilliant and memorable day out.

Isokuru is a marvelous gorge and one of the highlights of Pyhä-Luosto National park. Actually Isokuru is situated in Pyhä (Pyhätunturi), not in Luosto, as sometimes claimed.

It is easy to start hiking from Naava Visitor Center. The distance to Isokuru is a bit less than four kilometers in one way. You may walk the same trail back or you can choose a circle trail named Karhunjuomalampi Trail. If you choose Karhunjuomalampi Trail, the total distance is about ten kilometers. This trail is very easy to walk and suitable also for kids because it is a wide and graveled trail. In some places you find duckboards and you don't need rubber boots. Guide signs are very good but you can also ask a free map from Naava Visitor Center. Sometimes there may be mosquitoes in the area and so it is a good idea to take long-legged pants, long sleeve shirts and hats for everybody who is going to hike in the gorge.

Isokuru is a strictly protected area. Because of avalanches you may not go there in wintertime at all but in summertime you don't have to worry about the prohibition signs. However, in the gorge you have to stay on the path in summertime, too. In summer the trail is open 24/7 and it is free to visit there.

Isokuru is the deepest gorge in Finland (about 220 meters). In the end of the gorge you find Pyhäkasteenputous which is a 17 m high waterfall. The name Pyhäkasteenputous means literally the waterfall of holy christening. Also another names in the area are related to early Christianity or beliefs of the Sami people. Pyhätunturi means a holy fell, Pyhäkasteenlampi means a holy christening pond, Uhriharju means a sacrifice ridge and Noitatunturi means a witch fell. By the way, the small Pyhäkasteenlampi pond is 12 meters deep!

There are some day-use huts, lean-to shelters, campfire sites and dry toilets on the route but no any other services. So you can't buy anything to drink or eat on the route. Free firewood is available but take your own drinks, sausages or other snacks, matches and toilet papers with you.

I think that Isokuru Gorge is the must sight if you are going to visit Lapland in summertime. The place is marvelous and magical!

Ahvenlampi is a pond in Luosto, Sodankylä. It is an excellent scenic walking area and a famous fishing spot but you need a special fishing permit there. Duckboards right on the shore aren't in good condition anymore but the sandy walking trail (2.8 kilometers) around the pond is very good and easy to walk. This circle trail is suitable for children, too. You see marvelous views to Ukko-Luosto Fell on the route. You can begin walking from the back of Lapland Hotels Luostotunturi or from Pyhä-Luostontie 1387 Parking Area (Luosto Parking Lot). There is also a campfire shelter with free firewood on the route but take own matches and sausages with you. In winter Ahvenlampi is a good spot to watch the Northern Lights.
