Visit in the afternoon if you can when crowds are less. The internet link is very good as a guide.
Mr Evan’s restoration may have hindered more than helped, but excellent exhibits in the museum at Heraklion help to build the image.

We visited this site back in 1992 and were curious what had changed. First of all, now there are a lot of visitors, crowded in comparison with back then. The grand staircase is not accessible anymore, the queen megaron is behind ropes. All in all nice to be back again. Needles to say, we will not return in 32 years time. Entrance fee 15 euro for an adult.

Cool recreation of Arthur Evans' vision of what the throne room at the Palace may have looked like. Very well preserved but possibly not fully accurate.

Friday 28th August we were driving from Knossos to Kastelli and the route took us through Spilla where this impressive structure is located.

We did stop along the roadside so that we could take a closer look.

The viaduct was  built during the Egyptian occupation (1830-40) to transport water to the centre of Heraklion,

Friday 28th August and we visited this historic site of The Palace of Knossos.

On entering the Palace one of the first features we saw were the 3 Kouloures. The 3 circular pit like structures are located in the West Court of Palace. They are near the Statue of Minos Kalokairinos, he was  the first to undertake excavations of the ancient site.

It is unclear what the Kouloures (rings) were used for, there are a number of theories, they were  rubbish dumps for the Palace or the left-overs from sacred offerings. It is possible that they were usedfor storing grain. It is possible to see the remains of houses in 2 of them

On their own the Kouloures are not that special but they are an integral part of the amazing Knossos Palace.

Friday the 28th August and we visited the Palace of Knossos where this small statue/bust is located nearby the entrance to the site.

Greenish in colour the bust stands on a marble plinth it commemorates Minos Kalokairinos, who was born in Heraklion in 1843, he died in 1907 aged 64. He was a Cretan Greek businessman and an amateur archaeologist and the first to begin excavating at the Palace of Knossos.

His excavations were assisted and continued by Sir Arthur Evans, whose statue is near by.

Friday 28th August and we visited the Palace of Knossos.

This  unusual statue was one of the many features we saw as we walked around the site.

It is situated on the East Propyleia in the grounds.

It is a reconstruction of the horns of consecration. Originally the horns were placed on the roofs of buildings tombs or shrines as signs of sanctity of the building.

Luckily we had a map of the site which listed the highlights of the Palace, otherwise we would have walked straight past.

We booked a private family tour. On line booking was easy and we were in contact with them the days before to arrange the details . Akrivi, our guide, was excellent. She gave us a very interesting and pleasant tour, including both the historical and mythological aspects . We highly recommend her!
