David Austin Roses opening a location in Japan was big news among my gardening buddies. If you're looking for a pretty place to take a leisurely Sunday drive to then this is it. Even when the roses are not in season it's a beautiful spot, nestled atop a peaceful hill. It's so quiet all you can hear are native birds singing in the surrounding woods.

It's not easily accessible by train or bus and I think on the website they recommend taking a taxi from a nearby train station so you're best to head there by car. It's an easy drive, no narrow roads and it has a large carpark.

Why not pack a picnic? Within the actual garden there are several seats and grassy spots to make yourself at home (no BBQs are permitted and it's not the sort of place for loud crowds). There's also a koi fish pond the kids might enjoy. And below the main garden is a large grassed park area with an even bigger parking lot - great for a game of frisbee or touch rugby. There might also be a bush walk trail to one side. And a clean public toilet.

On the other side of the garden (which features all the available roses planted in English garden-style) is a garden centre with the very neatly pruned roses for sale. The addition of a gift shop was a welcome surprise on a recent visit. Cards, calendars and English souvenirs are pretty to look at - most have a rose theme. The roses are inexpensive and come with a 6 month guarantee. They do not sell cut flowers, only rose bushes.

If you were to make a visit to the area David Austin is fairly close to Aeon Sennan Rinku or the Rinku Premium Outlet Mall. It's just along the road from a McCafe and there is a Family Mart convenience store back on the main road.

I think it's lovely and it offers a pleasant break from more traditional Japanese tourist or sightseeing spots. If you want more Japanese things then drive a bit further along the same road to my favourite nearby temple Negoro-ji.

This mall has restaurants, stores and arcades. I went to some interesting shops I never thought I would come across in Japan such as a native american themed store selling dream catchers and incense. If you come to here from izumisano, take the train to tarui. The bus is more expensive and the walk from tarui isn't that far really.

This place is lovely - a beautiful English rose garden carved on a hillside in Japan is kind of unexpected. It's so lush and quiet I enjoy just driving over and sitting in the garden (free entry). There's also a koi pond. The addition of a gift shop was a welcome one - very lovely. The roses are reasonably priced and they have a huge variety of all David Austin Roses. This place is a gem in Sennan. Only thing it needs is a lovely tea room and a scone or two.
