Japan is always about the people and the interaction with them, regardless of whether you speak Japanese or not. We stayed at Eishoji for a night having walked part of the Nakasendo. We three were the only guests that evening. (When I booked the accommodation I had completely overlooked the fact that my HK Chinese friend might not appreciate sleeping surrounded by gravestones but she coped!)
Two newly added rooms at the rear of the property were quiet and good quality with new toilet facilities. The bathroom was basic and shared with the family. Other rooms were also available but were older. Food was simple and uncomplicated as you would expect in a Buddhist temple.
The monk and his wife were typical Japanese hosts - warm and friendly and we enjoyed the tranquility of the temple and its location just slightly off the main thoroughfare.
The temple is not high end accommodation but a lovely respite from all those other tourists! It’s worth a visit.
