Skip the crowds and see birds in your own private tour
Mar 2021
Support this nonprofit and see amazing birds in a very quiet and beautiful part of the cloud forest. Johnny was our guide for an early morning private birding hike. He was extremely knowledgeable and kind. He was very sweet to our at times noisy toddler along for the ride, and patient, looking for all the birds we were hoping to find. He is a great guide, my husband had such a good time he went back later in the week for another three hour hike and despite it pouring rain Johnny with a leaky poncho and both of them falling in the mud was absolutely wonderful as a guide.

Great hike!

The nature is hard to beat.

There are different trails to take. I recommend the black one. It js also the longest one but really worth it when you want to really get to know the true cloud forrest. The long tour might take 3-4 hours, depending on your speed.

Animals where rather invisible however a few nice birds were around. Can surely recommend to anyone in the area and looking for a good time.

My mom is 71 not athletic at all and she didn’t have any problem at the Y Challenge Trail, we had an amazing volcanoes view. I am very grateful for the previous reviews that helped me find this Reserve for my mom.
Pura vida!

Beautiful serene walk

Santa Elena is far better than the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We enjoyed both, but this was a MUST for us.We completed all the trails with no guide on our own pace,in about 3.5 hours.Less busy as not as popular as the Monteverde one,we had the whole place to ourselves.Free parking, quiet and full of wild life throughout and the most amazing sounds of birds.Wild flora everywhere, beautiful smells! We saw monkeys, butterflies and a quetzal that for a change was not well hid.The atmosphere was clear hence we had a great view of the Arenal volcano from the Mirador point. If you are in the area it's a shame not to visit this place.Cheaper entrance than Monteverde.Keep in mind that like many other roads in the region,is a bumpy ride.

Small but fine to get cloud forest intro
Feb 2020 • Couples
We went here rather than to the larger and more famous theme park because more convenient to do ziplining right after a few hundred yards away. Didn't regret. Definitely use the 2.5 he guided tour as we never would have seen the camouflaged insect or the owls alone. This cloud forest has a cool history as a high school project and we learned a lot. Bring or buy a cover as it rained even in dry season.

Average Hiking Experience
Jan 2020
If you've done hiking in various interesting places the Santa Elena Reserve will not register on your wow meter. The jungle is tight and the trails narrow so most of the time you are either looking at your footing or no more than 30 feet into the bush or up at the canopy. There are no vistas or rushing rivers or changing terrain. We saw more birds and mammals around our hotel in Santa Elena than at the reserve. If you name places Cloud Forests and Children's Eternal Rainforests hopefully you've got the game to back it up......hmmm it doesn't have that feel. However I am 100% for conserving natural places and that in itself is reason enough to applaud these preserves in Monteverde.

We did not see that much
Jan 2020
The weather was miserable - constant rain. Not much the reserve can do about that. There were about 6 of us with one guide. The groups were not very well spread out. We spent most of our time on a narrow trail right behind another group. If the other group saw anything interesting, it was gone by the time we got there. I suspect that the experience here is very dependent on guide quality.
