The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Excellent tour!

We were taken round by Sam who was a walking encyclopaedia on the butterflies- so knowledgeable! We learnt a lot and it was well worth it!

We were driving around and saw the sign so we went looking for the place. Lots of beautiful live butterflies and our guide was very knowledgeable about the butterflies. Then we got to the insects! Most are live and many you can actually hold which was fun and a little creepy in a good way! A good way to spend... More

Very easy place to find, Bath rooms are very clean as was the whole place, walk thru the door and it opens up to a nice waiting area where you'll find a very friendly and knowledgeable staff, all speak English, Spanish and several other Languages, once you get assigned to a guide you walk thru several different netted areas where... I had the pleasure of visiting this butterfly garden while recently making a trip to Monteverde in Costa Rica. The owner gave our tour group a wonderful experience of first showing us and educating us on a variety of insects, a tarantula, a scorpion, and other wildlife indigenous to the area. She was really entertaining and funny! She had our... More

While I can't guarantee a butterfly will land on YOU if you go to visit the Butterfly garden, you will thoroughly enjoy all you will learn. Our guide, Jordan, was very knowledgeable and really good with people. First we visited the insect house. While I originally thought I wouldn't be interested in anything but the butterflies, Jordan made it VERY... More

I read the reviews on TripAdvisor before deciding on this attraction. Having now visited it, I am perplexed by the positive statements. We saw very few butterflies, and our guide did not seem particularly knowledgeable about butterflies or anything related to them. She did seem to love insects at least. We were all greatly disappointed.

I visited with my 5-year-old son. We were fortunate to have a quasi private tour, with our guide Adrien, a french-speaking volunteer at the centre. That made quite a difference with my son who really enjoyed the visit and learnt! Adrien, was quite passionate and taught us many things about butterflies and insects alike and made the visit very interactive.... More

A short drive from Monteverde. Our guide, Sam, was a volunteer, and spent a lot of time with us, explaining behavior of butterflies and other insects. He made the tour very interesting.

This excursion was a great way to learn about the butterflies and bugs in the area. We also saw monkeys here (trying to steal the butterfly food, but it was the closest sighting we had!). The staff is dedicated and highly knowledgable. Great for all ages.

I have visited a large number of butterfly gardens in different parts of the world and this one was the most interesting by far. The reason for this was the quality of the information we were given and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff. We started with a talk on various weird and wonderful creatures and were introduced to... More
