Prior to tour around Uji old town street, we just stopped over at the wooden Ujibashi Bridge on the main road and took some photos on Uji River. There were construction works going on along the bridge at the time of our visit but we still enjoyed the peaceful environment around the area. There were lots of souvenir shops, tea... More

The entire town is quiet and peaceful. The Ujibashi was under construction when we were there but still a good photo spot because it is next to that beautiful river...

Just loved Uji as a relaxing, authentic Japanese location. So relaxing to walk along the river and cross at one of the many bridges, enjoying the beautiful cherry blossoms in April.

Uji is a suburb in Kyoto, famous for its green tea. The anime Hibike Euphonium was set in Uji and at the tourist information counter outside JR Uji station, you can get a free map highlighting places in Uji that were featured in the anime. The locations are all nearby and it makes for a pleasant walking tour of Uji.... More

If you have at least four days in Kyoto in late November to early December, a day trip out to Nara, Uji and Inari will be a nice break from the crowd to take in the fall colours. Uji is a suburb of Kyoto, about 20 minutes by train from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line. It is a... More

It's not a popular spot, but it has many historical meanings, joining up the two sides... You can walk across it to discover more about Uji. Uji itself is a good place to visit, infamous for its green tea (matcha) production... Go for a green tea ice-cream too! You know you want to!

According to the guide book, _Cool Japan_, by Sumili Kajiyama (which is an excellent guide to several places in Japan), this bridge connects the physical to the spiritual, male to female, and creates a melancholic atmosphere. It is lovely to view the town and mountains from.

Nothing to see here. The view North is of commuter trains going by. The bridge itself is at a traffic bottleneck so there are cars constantly on the bridge. The view south is towards Nakajima (center island) and for the next couple years, is under renovation so there is NO view worth seeing.

This bridge has long history if you know Japanese or a fan of Tales of Genji, also it is a starting point of Uji Scenic area, but today with modern construction and heavy traffic, I don't think it is worth to see for casual tourists.

The bridge offers some lovely, clear views of Uji and its surroundings, and the statue on one side of it is very attractive... it makes for part of a very pleasant walk around a very lovely town. It is also near the Tourist Information centre by the river, which itself is next to a place where you can attend a... More

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
