Consolidated sea fortress
Oct 2015 • Solo
Fort Rammekens is the oldest sea fortress in Western Europe, built in 1547. It is consolidated, i.e. preserved as it is, without restoring it. This gives the fort a nice ruinous look. Emperor Charles V ordered it to be constructed. During the Dutch revolt against Spain (80-years war) the people of Flushing lured the Spanish garrison out of the fort by a feigned attack on Arnemuiden, so that they could easily take the fort. Napoleon had casemates constructed in the fort. There are guided tours through the casemates and the rest of the fort, and through the nature around the fort.
