A fascinating place to visit
Sep 2021
It was a joy to see so much old industrial revolution machinery actually working, and hear the story of the history of iron working, not only in the area but also generally. Gordon was an informed, enthusiastic and engaging guide, whose clear descriptions added to the enjoyment of the trip.
My only slightly negative comment, which is intended to be helpful, was some surprise that there was no clear mention, or notices, reminding people that the equipment was dangerous. In particular the unguarded belt drives could cause severe injury. Common sense would tell most people to stay clear and keep young children under control, but not everyone has common sense!

PLEASANT SURPRISE
Aug 2019
It is a pity that this museum is only open at the weekend. We went today [25/9] and had a guided tour with Gordon who was very informative about all the old equipment that they had and about the history of all the forges that were in existence then, and we then had a ride on the narrow gauge railway. All the museum is run by volunteers and on Sunday the 1st September they are having an open day where hopefully all the machinery ill be operating with the help of their volunteers. This will be worth a visit for anybody who is interested in old machinery.

An amazing place

We have talked about visiting for a while and finally made the effort yesterday. It was amazing. Our guide Gordon brought the place to life with his entertaining stories and thorough descriptions of the machinery. It was fascinating to watch these big , beautiful machines in action, such a credit to the volunteers who keep this place alive. There were children on our tour and he kept them engaged by giving them little tasks to help him.A fascinating visit in a beautiful setting, complete with a little train running in the afternoon. Can't recommend it highly enough. They deserve support.

Fabulous guided tour
May 2019 • Couples
Called in with the wife and dog, we were pleasantly surprised by the set up and ended up staying for 2 1/2 hrs. We had a guided tour which was excellent and our guide fired up several of the engines and water wheels, a thoroughly enjoyable few hours for only £3 each and the dog was allowed to go everywhere with us. There was also a miniature railway in operation. A fab place to visit.

A chance to relax and indulge in some industrial history.

Wonderful location next to a clean sparkling River Don. Enjoyed looking around the many working exhibits in the forge and engineering shops. Had a ride on the miniature railway. Everyone was so friendly and prepared to take time out to explain things.

A remarkable collection of machines hidden away from the world. Come see some of them working in a beautiful setting by the river Don.
A tour round by the guides is well worth your time and money.
Minature railway on site, toilets, cafe and car parking.
Go see then tell your friends !!

A must visit Museum
Sep 2018 • Friends
A fascinating museum wonderfully explained by our guide Gordon Parkinson who captured the imagination of our group with his description of the forge, the history and the people who worked there.

You need two hours to get the best from the visit, the museum is professionally run by knowledgable volunteers, if you are interested in industrial heritage then Wortley Top Forge is a must.

Thank you Gordon and the team at Wortley.

A bit 'jobsworth'........disappointed in this comment.
Aug 2018 • Solo
I'm one of the hard working volunteers who spend 100s of hours each year to keep this unique and wonderful site open. It doesn't exist for nothing but is financed entirely by visitor income. Donations to the model engineers don't pay for the upkeep of the site, toilets, rates, etc. There is no such thing as a free ride, the place could easily be closed for lack of resources when you next want to visit the railway!

Jobsworth we are not!
