About
In 1670 Count Vitaliano Borromeo decided to turn a rock awash in the middle of the lake into a “place of delights”. It took four centuries to complete this magnificent work that includes Palazzo Borromeo and its scenic gardens. The tour of the house is fascinating: the Throne and Queens rooms, the Napoleon's Room, the Gallery of General Berthier displaying a collection of 130 paintings. On a lower floor, six grottoes covered with pebbles, tufa rock, stucco and marble were designed to afford cool relief from summer heat. World famous, its baroque garden, with the Teatro Massimo at the centre, consists of ten terraces in the shape of a truncated pyramid. Visitors marvel at the sight of the monumental unicorn, the obelisks, the statues, the two towers and other architectural elements, as well as the mighty trees, like the camphor and citrus trees, and the collections of roses, rhododendrons and camellias.

This is an absolutely astounding testament by the Borromeo familj and the wealth they must have accumulated over more than 300 years. Its an absolutely outstanding creation with so many details and a garden that is breathtaking

A must-see

Though the island is largely touristy - the palace is a must see. A more austere cousin of the palace on Isola Madre, the gardens are epic and the island has a lot more than just the palace to offer.

Amazing palace and grounds
Aug 2021
My wife and I spent a day on Isola Bella while vacationing in the Lago Maggiore region. We were not sure what to expect and we were happily surprised. The Palazzo Borromeo was interesting, historic, and beautiful. We had to leave after 3 hrs. to catch the boat back to Baveno and did not come close to seeing everything. We plan on a return visit in the future to finish our tour. Really a must see if you travel to Isola Bella, Stresa, or Baveno.

Aug 2021 • Friends
Totaly dissapointed. We couldn’t get in - we had five days old green card, and they didn’t let us in. Make no sense!! At the entrance they told us to GO to test and after two days again.... so, in the Future we will skip such a places.

The building was impressive but that is all I couild say. Not worth to stand inline to wait to get in. Look from the oputside and you have seen enough.

A must see
Aug 2021
The palace with its gardens are beautiful. Do not forget the cages with the multicolor little birds in the gardens. They are adorable. We were not lucky with the weather but the visit was even completely worthwhile. Beautiful flowers everywhere.

Highlight of our stay
Sep 2020 • Couples
We hadn't done a lot of research so ended up getting a ferry to three islands. We went late in the day which meant there were fewer visitors (which was great). We have seen quite a few palaces but this was really unique and worthwhile for the beautiful and ambitious decor and gardens.

Beautiful island ... I would say fantastic!

Acomfortable boat took us from Stresa to Isolabella in 10 min. The visit to the palace was magical. Very suggestive place and full of history! A large door with a view opens onto a fabulous garden, full of holes and magical creatures! The right period I would say April / May when it is not too hot cistus exposure to the sun! To be given absolutely!

Amazing gardens ! It makes you feel like an aristocrat
Aug 2020
Although a bit pricey (look out for combined deals with the boat tickets) it is a lovely experience - the palace is pretty baroque and fully integrated in the scenery - however, the gardens are the star of the visit _ Excellent In good weather I would allow myself enough time to stroll and relax in the gardens
