About
“The Abbey that refused to die” Founded in 1216 by Cathal Crovderg O’Connor, King of Connaught. Among the medieval religious foundations whose ruins dot the Irish countryside, the Abbey is unique. This remarkable Abbey is the only church in Ireland where, for 800 years, Mass has been offered without a break. Experience for yourself the story of “the Abbey that refused to die”. Our Tour Guides will take you through the stories of Cromwellian burnings, suppression and notorious priest hunter, Sean na Sagart, and in their absence a video is available in the Gift Shop. Spend some time to savour the atmosphere the grounds, also a great place for children to explore. Ballintubber Abbey has also become a popular wedding venue for couples seeking a distinctive and historic setting. Find out more about attractions linked to the Abbey on your visit, including the Tóchar Phádraig, Church Island and the Celtic Furrow. Worth the visit!
We happened upon this Abby looking for rainy day activities while visiting the Westport area and loved our experience! We did not have a reserved tour but Pauline was so very generous with her time giving us history of the Abby and sharing stories. We loved getting to know her. She would give an amazing full tour I imagine! You do need a tour to see inside. Lots of history, good feels and things to see and learn either way. We loved walking in the grass to the baptism well among the sheep the most.
Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your tour with Pauline. Yes our Abbey is a trove of history events and there’s so much to learn and see while visiting the Abbey. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Regards

    Historic, informative, spiritual
June 2023 Ballintubber Abbey is an incredible example of Ireland's best-preserved historic religious buildings. It is difficult to take in the sheer magnitude of history and heritage here without a guided tour. The wonderful Muriel gives a fantastic tour of the grounds, from medieval Ireland up to its transformation in recent times. Highly recommend it if you are interested in religious tourism, Irish history, or unique architecture, with its incredible French stain-glassed windows. She was able to give us great information on my husbands Burke ancestors. The grounds are beautiful and my entire family spoke of the peace and spirit they felt there.
Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your tour with Muriel. Yes our Abbey is a trove of history events and there’s so much to learn and see while visiting the Abbey. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Regards

    Lovely place to stop off
We stopped by Ballintubber Abbey on the way to airport as we were flying home that afternoon. What a lovely impromptu stop off.  There was  preparations for wedding going on however staff at the Abbey were very accommodating and allowed us to look around and even opened the little church shop where we saw a video of the history of the Abbey.   Many thanks to Pauline for her time and company and great chat. PS: There is a fab pub across the road from the Abbey if you felt like some refreshments on your visit.

Stunning place with a 5 Star welcome
Apart from the sheer, stunning beauty of this place, we experienced a most wonderful welcome from Muriel, the custodian who was working on the day we were there. We were playing at a wedding and she facilitated us in every possible way, storing our things, giving us a beautiful changing room with tea & coffee, mirrors essential for make up! She couldn’t have been more helpful and kind to us. It completely made our day. Muriel gives a five star welcome to Ballintubber Abbey.

    Ballintubber Abbey
I went with a large group of friends on a day trip to Abbey we had organised in advance that we would get a tour and also get sandwiches and tea directly after a visit Muriel was her guide. She is simply exceptional ,her breath of knowledge., kindness and the enthusiasm that she has for the history of this beautiful place made the whole day a wonderful experience. She is definitely a very valuable member of staff at the Abbey. I would recommend a visit to the Abbey and contacting Muriel if you wish to organise any group tour, et cetera. She was outstanding !! The Abbey is exceptional , rich in history , the grounds are beautiful.

A well worth visit of our Christian history
I visited with a group of senior citizens. Everyone came away having learned so much and loved the visit. Thanks Pauline for bringing the history of the Abbey to life and giving us memorable facts, all with such good humour.

    Glad We Visited Ballintubber Abbey!
Delightful visit with the Men of Worth tour. The abbey was exquisite - beautifully restored building and beautiful grounds. Our tour guide, Pauline, was wonderful, taking us through the literal ups and downs of the church and some of the heroes and villains of the day. Don’t miss this facet of Irish history when you visit County Mayo.

Amazing tales of Ancient pilgrim routes, local legends and Priest Hunters!
We got a tour of the Abbey and grounds on Friday 24th May with the fabulous guide Pauline. She gave us the full history of the Abbey, animating the stories and characters in her own inimitable way. It was a delight to spend time with her and hear her passion for the Abbey and what it represents to the community. Thanks Pauline, we will be back. All the best

    An Abbey Highlight
What a delightful unexpected pleasure. Traveling in Ireland means stopping at castles and abbeys. However, you never know quite what to expect. Ballintubber Abbey history and grounds proved to be a highlight of the trip. The history came alive with the guided tour and if you go, be sure to view the Stations of the Cross on the grounds around the Abbey. Be sure to listen to or read about the history, continuous Mass since 1216 including 236 years without a roof (thanks Cromwell).
