Best day of my life
Jun 2021
For Christmas 2020, I received a gift that would soon result in the best day of my life. I got the junior keeper experience at HCC. It is honestly so immersive and amazing to get up-close with so many animals. Holding an orange-kneed(?) tarantula and pancake tortoise, cleaning up wallaby poop, feeding lemurs (instead of meerkats due to the intense rain that day), making food enrichment for the armadillos, and health checking a pangolin (or armadillo, can't remember). Lovely staff and gorgeous, happy animals. Would recommend, and will definitely be going again.

Lovely little animal centre with plenty to see and fabulous staff.
Sep 2021
We visited Hemsley for a Meet The Meerkats experience bought for our two children (aged 6 & 8). First time we'd ever been and definitely not the last! It's such a lovely little place, run by passionate and enthusiastic staff and with surprising plenty of wonderful and varied animals. The little tea room was perfect with a nice inside and outside seating area, the guy at reception was very welcoming and bubbly which set the tone for a fun afternoon. Ben was our experience guide/host and he was amazing! He clearly loves his job and was very knowledgeable and so nice. He put our kids at ease as the reality of the "cute" meerkats actually hit when they stepped into the enclosure lol. They actually have very sharp claws and don't like to share food!! Still a special experience and they loved it. Very safe and sterile, a short but fun experience. We then spent about an hour wandering round the rest of the centre, being able to get up nice and close, seeing all types of well looked after and happy animals. We especially loved the Aussie Walkabout where we were lucky enough to see a newly born joey Wallaby! Absolutely recommend this lovely little centre and knowing that we're supporting a local place that's doing a wonderful job makes it all the better.

We had a discovery experience day yesterday with our son. Everyone was brilliant and he had an amazing time meeting all the animals. We were all made to feel special.
Thanks to all at HCC 😊

Interesting animals and great staff

We booked a 'half day animal keeper shadowing experience' for two and had a great time. The park has some of the well known species such as ring tailed lemurs and meerkats however there are some other less known species such as the maned wolf and the red fronted lemurs.

Doing the shadowing experience meant that we got to go 'behind the curtain' and got involved in seeing how the animals diet is carefully considered and helped prepare some of the porcupine's food. We also had the joy of feeding the porcupine's, lemurs, meerkats and tamarind monkeys in their enclosure which was a very enjoyable and genuinely interesting experience. For the meerkats and the lemurs the feeding involved multiple animals climbing on you which was really fun. I never knew how gentle porcupine are either. We also had a bonus feeding of the asian small clawed otters after we requested which we were extremely grateful.

Our guide Sarah was brilliant throughout in that she was very friendly and no question was too silly. She was incredibly knowledgeable and hers and her colleagues enthusiasm for what they do. If any one is interested in becoming an animal keeper i would really recommend this as much as I would recommend to anyone who is interested in learning about and getting up close and personal with some amazing creatures.

Lemur experience
Sep 2021 • Friends
We visited for my friends birthday and it was amazing. We did the lemur experience as my friend loves them and we both loved it. Sarah (the member of staff) was so knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had. The lemurs were nice and friendly too!

Otter experience!

Great fun, got up close feeding the otters (with tongs). Henry was very knowledgeable and friendly. Would recommend the experience if you love otters. Irene the otter was my partner’s favourite!

Bad management / excellent staff
Sep 2021 • Family
After spending £100 on a virgin voucher on zoo keeper experience I was completely shocked that my partner and I were asked to pay admission price to accompany our son on his experience even tho we were there to supervise him and he can’t come in alone. After the lovely cafe lady called the manager down he didn’t want to know at all . We had just driven 3 hours and didn’t have much money and the manager didn’t not want to know at all and it was pay the money or no entry . Customer service skills need to be worked on massively as being sympathetic and polite goes a long way . Next time how about explaining in a polite manner why we had to pay admission and maybe a free drink or something whilst you told us to wait outside for our zoo keeper would have meant we would come back ! Right now that absolute joke was out the way we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Sarah our zoo keeper . She was absolutely amazing and turned a very sour start into something we truly can’t put into words . Not only did our son leave with the biggest smile but she included my partner and I in everything and made the experience something we won’t ever forget . I held my first big spider and I still can’t stop smiling . Thank you so much Sarah for a wonderful day .

Hi Robert P, Thanks for leaving a review. I am delighted that your son had a great experience and I shall pass on the message to Sarah. As for admission, it is widely stated on all experience pages, our website and T's and C's that entry for the participant is included in the price (it isn't in a lot of zoos), and that any spectators, including parents etc. are subject to the usual entry fee. The manager you spoke with yesterday explained this is our policy so we are sorry that you missed this when booking the experience. The manager you spoke with yesterday teaches all of our staff their customer service skills, and he was simply stating company policy. We are unable to offer free gestures for something that is not our fault. So unfortunately, the "joke" is not our manager, you are simply annoyed that you did not read the booking confirmation correctly. However, aren't you lucky to have been included in the experience (the experience was trained to Sarah by the manager you spoke with), something which would not happen in most other zoos as you would strictly have been spectators or charged an extra fee for taking part. Again, I am delighted your son, and yourselves, has such a great time! The HCC Team

Lacklustre, Pungent and Disappointing Experience
Sep 2021 • Couples
All in all visiting this conservation centre was a really disappointing and sparse experience for both my partner and I. During our time here we spotted more than one rat running around inside the animal enclosures, the whole zoo was flooded with a pungent aroma and an alarming number of the animals were repeatedly circling their enclosures in distress.

Hi Joseph D, Thanks so much for speaking to one of us about your concerns, rather than TripAdvisor - which is read by other people who can literally do nothing to address your feelings. The smell (as signed around the area), is from our maned wolves, who are famous for this aroma. We'd love for you to chat to us about signs of distress you observed and noted on your visit. Our staff are here every day and are experts in animal behaviour, so would be able to reassure you. We don't wake up and come to work because we don't care. Sparse would imply something is scattered or thinly dispersed, or in short supply (dictionary). From this I deduce you are referring to the amount of animals we have, yet stated an alarming "number" left you feeling uneasy. Lacklustre implies "without energy or effort", which is simply not true on our part. If you would like to discuss this, please email enquiries@hemsleyconservationcentre.com Kind regards, The HCC Team

Magical
Sep 2021 • Family
A present for our animal-mad 6yr old twin grandsons was a delight for us all. This little conservation centre has created a wonderful educational and enjoyable package in the zoo keeper experience . Holding a tarantula and armadillo were highlights but nothing quite matched the merry madness of the meerkat feeding - over their heads and under their feet - laughter all round! Sarah was an excellent guide who went out of her way to make this day informative and enjoyable for us. Thank you and well done Sarah and Hemsley .
