Brilliant visiting to this charming boutique winery
Feb 2017 • Friends
Cantabria is starting to make a name for itself as a wine producing region and this charming family-run bodega is one of the region's leading pioneers in recovering the wine making tradition. Located about 50 minutes inland from Santander, in the hills above San Vicente de Toranzo, Sel d'Aiz (meaning `meadow of stone´) is a charming and scenic place to visit. We went last Saturday - a group of 20 - and spent 2 hours with the owners Asier and Miriam who welcomed us with bowls of hot wine and then treated us to a hands-on tour of the vineyard followed by an extensive tasting of all of their wines accompanied by tasty tapas and local cheeses. They are passionate about what they do and Asier's extensive knowledge delivered in friendly and easy to understand fashion made the visit. It is clear that they have had to work their tails off to bring this project to fruition and it's nice to see that one of their wines, their Reisling, was voted the best in Cantabria last year while all of their wines have a 90 - 92 point rating in the prestigious Guia Penin. Highly recommend this visit.
