This is a relatively modern church which contains the Byzantine Black Madonna statue. The interior walls are covered with images of the life of Mary and Jesus, but they are not painted but very detailed mosaics by a modern school. You have to stand very...More

Nice visit to church during a cruise ship trip whilst in Sicily. Mass starting so a bit low key but lovely church and pleasurable drive up the hills. Great photo opportunities with the great views. Few shops around church along with souvenir shops.

We drove to the church. The road is narrow and winding, recommend going early when traffic is light. Views from the piazza are breathtaking of the Aoelian Islands. Inside the church are wonderful paintings and of course the Black Madonna.

The church can be reached by transport as well as walking... but I recommend it's best to take transport. The church itself was very beautiful and of course... its main attraction is the Madonna Of Tindari. Interesting story, that one! At the bottom of the...More

See the black Madonna of course but take in the wonderful mosaics along both walls that tell the story of Christ. The title of each is in the glass above the mosaic. Fine detail by the Italian School of Mosaics. Then there's the old sanctuary...More

Tindari can be reached by car or bus. If by car you have to park at the bottom in the free car park and take the very frequent buses to the top, just 1 euro return. The church of the Black Maddona has an interesting...More

Great views in a cute shopping district. Beware of the hours closed during riposo from 12:45 to 2:30pm. While you wait, we ate at the Bar Tyndaris for very good authentic Sicilian food at good prices. Bonus of clean bathrooms.

I am taking a cruise and one stop is Messina. What are the nearest tourist attractions to the port/dock? How near is this to the port/dock? Also, do you have any information about the Black Madonna? Thanks.

It all depends on how much time you have ashore. Assuming that you will be arriving at Messina harbour early in the morning and will be departing late afternoon, the following would be a possible itinerary, provided that... More

Your cheaper option is the 2 hour train from Palermo to Tindari for $12-$15. The bus takes 5 hours and costs $44.

We want to see the Sanctuary, won't have a car, it's really hard to figure out where to stay. Any pilgrim accomodations?

There are no hotels in Tindari. There is one B&B called the Agora. I assume you are reaching Tindari by bus
