Fun tour with Silvia
Jul 2019 • Couples
I visited here recently and loved the visit so much that we started looking for Elio Altare wines everywhere. This place DOES NOT accept credit cards. So we could not buy any bottle from Silvia which was very disappointing. But she gave great tours and information on the winery. She is very passionate about her work and knows so much about the industry as well. I totally recommend visiting this winery after making a reservation.

Wonderful wines and fantastic host
May 2018 • Couples
We were able to secure a visit at Elio Altare about 3 weeks in advance and are so glad we did. Silvia, one of two sisters and the 3rd generation of the Altare family to grow wine in the area, gave us the tour and she is amazing. So much personality, so much knowledge, and an awesome introduction to the history of both the family and the Barolo region. Three family dogs lazed about as we learned about everything and then enjoyed a comprehensive tasting. Even though there were no wines available to purchase at the conclusion, we could not have been happier with the visit. We talked about Silvia's stories for days after the tour was complete. Like others say, a visit here is not to be missed!!!

This is a winery not to be missed.

This is one of the most historic of the wineries of Barolo. Altare is a small, beautiful boutique winery now run by Elio Altare’s daughter, Sylvia. Sylvia has appeared in the movies, “Somm: Into the Bottle” and “The Barolo Boys”. In both movies Sylvia tells the story of her father, who as a young man in his twenties, drove to France and met with some of the biggest names in French wine, and learned techniques that he took back home with him and applied to his family’s winery, transforming Barolo from a low quality, cheap, hard to drink table wine, into one of the best wines in the world. Sylvia is a part of one of the pioneering Barolo families, and yet she is fun, kind and takes enormous amounts of her time to give a wonderful tour of her families estate. I highly suggest you try to get an appointment with Sylvia. If you are lucky enough to meet her and tour her winery, it will be one of the most fun and informative tours that you will find in Barolo. Sylvia sells out of her wine every year, so you may have to look around at the Communale in La Morra or shop around at wine stores in Barolo to find her wine. This was truly the best day of my entire vacation.

Try your hardest to secure a visit here!

All the previous reviews are spot on. The tour is a great exemplar of Piemontese history, hospitality and culinary delicacies. Silvia could not be more welcoming and generous with both her time and her wines, which are simply breathtaking. It is rare to have the opportunity to taste back-vintages at wineries of this calibre. The 2007 Cerrutti was a particular high-point of our trip. Thank you Silvia!

Pure passion
May 2016 • Friends
I have been to this well known and famous winery with a group of tourist from Canada. It was my first time in there and let me say that spending time with Silvia was the highlight of the week. Pure passion for her life, family and traditions. Silvia explained us the history of the "Barolo boys"'and how this wine and area became worldwide famous in the last 30years starting from an anonymous production of table wine
Very interesting and cool
We capped the merting with an extended wine tasting leaded by our new friend Silvia. 👍🏼👍🏼

Passion for wine!
May 2016 • Friends
Silvia Altare is just as wonderful as the wines she produces. We started with a tour in the celler and she told us the story about her fathers work to improve the wine production. We moved on and she explained all the different stages in the wine making. The tasting was very nice experience with very different kind of wines, all are very good. We ended up in the wineyard and took a look at the nets used to prevent hail from ruin the grapes. I loved every moment of the visit. You learn to respect all the work behind a bottle of Altare wine. You will drink their wines and enjoy it even more after the visit. Thank you Silvia!

A gracious host with spectacular wines
Apr 2016 • Couples
We had the chance to visit with Silvia Altare today and what an amazing experience. The wines as a standalone are fantastic, but they are complimented by the most gracious hostess who wants to make your entire Piemonte experience memorable. The personal collection and reserve is a sight to see, and the experience start to finish is a must.

Tribute to Elio - unforgetable
Dec 2015 • Family
Today I was visiting one of those young abitious wine producers in Romania who intends to make romanian wine a leading delicacy ... and suddenly I had to remember the day in the early 90s when I met Elio Altare the first time. Ever since he is and will always be an inspiration in terms of dedication.

The night before in a nice restaurant in Alba: I was unable to cope with the wine card - thick like a public phone book - and the waiter kind of proposed, no he insisted on a mid-prized Barolo from La Morra. This bottle changed our travel schedule and the gustatory range of my taste buds. Obviously we had to get to know this wizard of fermentation itself.

The following afternoon we enjoyed the incredible warmness of the Altare couple. Lucia took care of our baby while Elio allowed us to enter in his oenological world - in the winery and later almost two hours at a table right next to the kitchen. Through the kindness of Lucia we left La Morra with a box of liquid memories for the very special moments.
