This National Historic Site is the only one to preserve the memory of Canada's ranching industry, which was so critical to its economic and social development. The Bar U was one of Canada's leading commercial ranching operations, specializing in cattle, Percheron horse (French draft horses, important before tractors), and, later, grains, from 1882 (when the government opened the area to... When I initially planned we'd come here it was more as a detour on our trip from Calgary to Fernie to give the kids something to do to break up the drive. I only thought we'd spend a couple hours here max, but boy was I wrong! I couldn't pry them away from the place! Bar U is a national... More

We did the wagon tour in September with friends from around the world and it was amazing. Learned lots about ranching history in Alberta and even had cowboy coffee[campfire] Worl guests were amazed. Would recommend highly

This is a wonderful place to stop and learn. Got a wonderful introduction to Percheron horses. The old cowboy who gave us the info was outstanding. Great gift shop, clean restrooms. Nice little cafe. Now I know how the west was tamed. Very friendly staff.

I saw the Bar U advertised a lot of places and felt it must be a "must stop" location. Frankly, was a bit disappointing and still don't quite get what all the fuss is about. They have a gift shop which is way over priced (IMO). There is some historical significance here which is o.k. to read about (photos in... More

The Ranch is full of interesting history and links to UK and Europe. The information boards aren't too onerous and there are a lot of actual bits to the Ranch to see, including the cookhouse (where you can sample what they are making!), A horse and cart ride with excellent information and the round-up where you can have tea or... To experience the real Alberta, you need to take other roads. Highway 22 and Highway 40 inspire us with incredible scenery.

Great history, great views, and nice people. Loved the wagon ride to the buildings into the coulee. Views are fantastic. Loved the photos showing the ranch history. Highly recommend.

Even if your family, like mine, recently immigrated to Canada you will be proud when you visit Bar U Ranch! Our kids loved the Parks Canada Xplorer program and got to collect a dog tag for their collection here

Great place to learn about Alberta Ranch. Learned a lot of neat facts sitting around a campfire drinking hot campfire coffee. The man driving the horses and the lady at the campfire were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable as were all the staff with the exception of the metal workers ( older man and women) in the horse shoe fitting building...
