About
An oasis of gently country life Dekema State, north of Leeuwarden, was first build during the 15th century. The moated house and its gardens are restored before the year 2000 and opened to public. The content of the house, with portrait-gallery, antique furniture and the treasures inherited from older generations, demonstrate the life style of a titeld family as it lived in Friesland until the 1930's.

Hidden precious location
Jan 2020
Embarrassed to discover such a wonderful location close to home, without knowing about it. Just a few hundred meters from the main road, a quiet, well-maintained village hides an old castle-like house. Black swans in the pond. Bees in a botanic garden. All biological herbs and special plants. So near to Leeuwarden, its amazing.

Well kept mansion, friendly and adequate staff
Oct 2015
We visited the Dekema-state 10 days ago. It was a pleasant event, the early 20th cent. atmosphere in the premises was instructive, and the volunteer staff very helpful with explanations. They even speak Frisian, which I can not understand...Beautiful portraits by Van der Geest!
One remark: in the information-booklet nothing is said about the date(s) the mansion was built. That should have been included.

Small little castle
May 2015 • Solo
In the North of the Netherlands you don't have a lot of castles and what does fall into this categorie is really small, one of these (and not the most appealing) is the Dekemastate.

It has nicely decorated rooms, but don't expect too much, the entry fee is low (it's including a walk in the gardens) so if you end up in the north... then make a castle tour and include this state in your list... Just also to see what the differences are and to get a better overall picture about the life in castles in the north.
