Kings and nobles entered Znojmo via this port. This upper gate was a very important part in the fortifications of Znojmo and was located along the so-called Haberská stezka (one of the major medieval trade routes between Bohemia and Moravia, so called as it passed a municipal named Habry). 13th Century a vaulted corridor ran through downtown, protected by the high Hranolov Tower (similar to the preserved Vlkov tower nearthe lower gates) the plain upper gate was reinforced with a high Square Tower (location of the current Komerční banka). Over time, the reinforcements were systematically upgraded and enlarged in a comprehensive system equipped with various gates, moats, draw-bridges, walls, ramparts and fences. Mid 15th century the so-called “Barbakan brána” (upper gate of the wide conical reinforcements) stood in the middle of the outer moat, its ditches on both sides can still be seen at náměstí Svobody. Due to the inevitable growth of the city outside the ring of old walls so 19th century extensive changes and demolition: part of the moats and walls at the West side of the upper port in Horní předměstí (current náměstí Svobody) were completely demolished, as the city had to be “open” to transport and trade this was also the fate of the old Gothic tower port at the entrance of Velké Michalské ulice, soly this conical "Barbakan with port" has been preserved and was later converted to an apartment complex.
