Small provincial town
Nov 2021
A nice main square, where the buildings have kept a homogeneous sight. Some restaurants a a coffee bar on one of the corners. It seems life is easy going there. The surroundings are heavily populated, but the total population must be around 25000 or so.

Pleasant historic ambience
Feb 2020
White and dark brown are the dominant colors of the many historic buildings in central Chachapoyas. Most houses have tiled roofs that hangover the streets providing at least some protection against the rains to pedestrians.

A severe earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale) severely damaged the historic center in 1928. What can now be observed is mostly the result of extensive reconstruction. Overall a pleasant place to visit. I liked the fact at least one major street (Jiron Amazonas) is now a pedestrian zone.

What I missed most, is that streets are not marked. Orientation is problematic. However, with just 32,000 inhabitants Chachapoyas is relatively small, so the problem is manageable. People are friendly, do know street names and are always willing to help out.

After Kuelap a tour in Chachapoyas is relaxing
Dec 2019
Chachapoyas could be a small town, but the people are friendly and the level of delinquency is really low, My tour was around the city, I hired a tour at a travel agency near the main plaza, it was a nice experience to the highlands and history of the people that lived and fought the Incas in the past. Nice story, for sure!

I guess it's a Centro...

There is a plaza and a church of course plus a lot of restaurants and tour agencies. If you're staying in chachapoyas you won't have a choice about going there but certainly it's nothing special.

Interesting Town
Jun 2018 • Friends
The plaza was. Ding rebuild and “tiled” when I was there, so it was inaccessible, but it will be beautiful when it is finished. The town is good for walking as it is small and unique. There are no busses, tu there are ample taxis. However, if you stay in town, your feet are your best mode of transportation.

A very special place, very colonial and friendly. Great place to wonder around.
Jan 2018 • Solo
I spent 8 days in a hostel on the main plaza. Unfortunately the plaza was under extensive renovation so I did not get to enjoy it. But I did enjoy the surrounding area and hiked to the view point and visited the central market close to the plaza. Lots of good restaurants and a few artisan shops. The place to stay to visit the wonderful places ruins and natural sites all within a day's trip.

Charming Colonial City
Jul 2017 • Couples
Having travelled to most parts of Peru over the past few years I was delighted to discover this lovely city in the northern mountains. The Plaza de Armas is a relaxing central square overlooked by an impressive cathedral and surrounded by unimposing shops, cafés and tourist agencies housed in colonial buildings. There's a warm and friendly atmosphere about the place which I hope it will manage to retain as tourist numbers increase.

Typical Peruvian city-center
Jul 2017 • Friends
I don't know what I expected from a city on the edge of the Andes and the Amazon. The center is nice enough. It employs the typical colonial amalgam of grid streets, a Plaza de Armas with fountain, a rather non-descript church, a bewildering array of tourism agencies and pharmacies, white-washed stucco facades, and wooden balconies. Chachaoyas looks relatively new and regular compared to Cajamarca. There are some interesting restaurants and one pedestrian street. Yet, in the end, the Centro Historico is not the reason to come to Chachapoyas and need not detain you.

A small beautiful colonial town located in the mountains, very well preserved and with a lot of attractions to vist as the Fortress of Kuelap or the Gocta waterfall. Very hard to reach, but once there is a lovely town to wander around.
