I had already written a review for my trip just a few short weeks ago, but this time I came back with my cousin to do more genealogy research and Michal nailed it again. This time, in addition to seeing my long-lost family from the last trip, he also took us to nearby towns where we had family from as well. In just walking into the local government offices, we met the mayors of two towns who offered us so much information and a wonderful welcome. The one mayor even invited us to spend a day in the Tatra mountains with his family...and Michal came along to translate for us. We broke through even more brick walls that we have had for many years. We found my 2nd great grandmother's grave. We visited the local Slovak emigration museum. We are back home now trying to make sense of all the documentation we found and planning our next trip for summer 2024 to do more....and we will be booking with Michal again. Thank you so much Michal!

I, along with my 79 year old mother, spent two days touring around eastern and Central Slovakia with Michal. All lines of my family originate from this area. After canceling a planned trip in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, we focused on October 2023 and Michal was one of my first points of contact to out together the rescheduled trip. We exchanged emails back and forth for probably 5 or 6 months prior to the trip. We ended up basing ourselves in Kosice, with Michal picking us up each day, where we came up with a loose schedule for which villages to visit. We ended up passing thru 8 total villages that we are connected to, with longer stops in 3 or 4. He is masterful at the geneaolgy aspects, stopping by the town hall, combing thru the cemeteries, and simply talking to people on the street. We ended up tracking down some distant relatives in two villages, along with finding two old family houses. It really was a wonderful experience and we could not have asked for more. We have continued to correspond and work on family research following the trip.

I would like to take a few minutes to send my thanks to Michal Razus for an unforgettable tour of Slovakia. My daughter surprised my husband and me with a trip to Slovakia to visit the birthplace of my grandparents who immigrated to the US in 1906. Michal was able to make arrangement for me to see the original marriage license that they had signed. It was an unforgettable moment for me! Michal acted as our tour guide for three days. Michal made recommendations for hotels to stay at and places to dine at. (Great choices Michal!) During that time, Michal had located a cousin in the village where my grandmother was born and arranged a visit. Michal acted as our interpreter. He made it so I was also able to visit the church where my grandparents were married and the cemetery where some of my ancestors are buried. What an amazing day! Michal also gave us historical tours the following day and I was able to visit the Spis Castle, amazing views from the top! He also took me to other historical towns and churches. I am a historical geek but my husband is not but he has told friends this was the best part of our trip, visiting Slovakia! Thank you again Michal for making this trip a memorable trip and never tiring of my endless questions. Michal was friendly, knowledgeable, and just a great person to be with. If anyone is planning or considering a trip to Slovakia, make sure to contact and schedule his services for your stay in Slovakia. You will not be disappointed. Again, thank you Michal! I’ll think of you as a friend forever.

Michal was beyond amazing and I highly recommend booking a tour with him; for sightseeing or family heritage tours. I contacted Michal based on a review I saw on Facebook and he delivered more than I could have ever expected in helping us find living relatives in Slovakia as well as showing us the sites not part of the family heritage tour (castle, wooden churches, medieval towns, etc.) He was very good at keeping up on time, a pleasure to chat with, and took great care of my elderly parents with limited mobility. His recommendations for restaurants and hotels were also great. It was so good, I have already booked a return trip in 1 month with Michal to show my cousin around!

Michal Razus certainly deserves the rave reviews I read here that led me to seek him out for genelogy research and a tour of ancestral villages in eastern Slovakia. He was not only very professional and thorough in his research, but the tour was conducted in a way that made the experience so much richer.
We spent an entire day canvassing the two remote villages of my ancestors-- visiting churches, cemeteries, homes, town offices and stores, interacting with so many kind & generous local people, from a small shop owner, to an Orthodox priest, a property owner and a town office clerk. Michal's respectful and attentive demeanor never failed to spark the interest of the people approached who responded by providing information, new contacts and avenues for us to pursue. In fact, some even phoned friends to see what they might know, others invited us into their homes and churches for extended conversations & refreshment. Michal was tireless in pursuing each new lead and the process was as rewarding as the results.
From the historical background information Michal shared on the drive, to seeing the counyryside and property my family had owned, to meeting one potential relative, I gained so much more than just a 'family tree'. Through the day long immersion in the villages I came to understand and see what my great grandparents lives must have been like, what drove them to leave and what has transpired since and remains today.
This trip was one I had long fantasized about doing, but often postponed questioning whether I could justify it. BUT I am so thankful I connected with Michal as nothing can compare with the rich experience he provided and the memories I took away. I will always be grateful. So if you are pondering a visit to your ancestral home in eastern Slovakia I strongly encourage you to contact Michal; you won't be disappointed.

In addition to the ancestral tour, I joined Michal on a second day long tour of the wooden churches of eastern Slovakia, Saris (Open-air) Museum and the beautiful medieval town of Bardejov that I also highly recommend. Michal organized a day packed with amazing sites and historical background that I never could have accessed on my own. Michal's breath of knowledge, openness to questions, and willingness to engage in conversation on a variety of topics makes him the BEST guide one could have.

Michal was a pleasure to work with prior to our visit to Slovakia and was an expert, knowledgeable guide during our 2 day visit in October 2022. He added some important information to our family tree and prepared an excellent report on his findings. He picked up my family in Budapest and drove us to Bratislava where he proceeded to show us around on a 3 hr walking tour. He had a very comfortable, large van that was more than adequate for all of our luggage. The next day he drove us to Nyitra and Prievidza where some of my relatives had lived and he provided much local color. MIchal was very accommodating of my 92 year old father who traveled with my husband and I. He went out of his way to help us navigate buying a train ticket back to Bratislava at the end of the tour. I plan to continue working with Michal to help research some additional relatives with ties to Slovakia.

We worked with Michal Razus to arrange a one day trip this past September (2022) through the villages in Slovakia where our grandparents and their families were born. I had already done quite a bit of research but Michal was able to find several records I was missing as well as to confirm the locations of the various churches where family baptisms, marriages, and funerals would have taken place.

Michal picked us up at our hotel in Poland and drove us to the five Slovak villages on our itinerary. He was pleasant company to travel with, knowledgeable about the local history and geography, always pointing out anything that might be of interest along the way. He was also very interested in hearing the stories of our Slovak ancestors once they arrived in America ... what their experiences were like, where they settled, what type of jobs they had, and which customs they passed along to their families (such as traditional Christmas Eve dinners, etc). He was always open to our questions and provided a lot of information about what life would have been like in the 1860 – 90’s before they emigrated to the USA.

At each stop, if the church was not open, Michal contacted the parish office and if unable to reach the local priest, he’d try people in the town hall knowing they might have access. We were amazed at how welcoming the townspeople were when they learned we were from America and our relatives once lived in their towns. They typically stopped what they were doing to assist us, often pulling out village records to show us entries for family members, and in one case giving us a book on the village history (in which I found my great-grandmother’s name). In another town, they ran out to retrieve the key and met us at the church allowing us a brief visit. We’re sure none of this would have been possible without Michal’s ability to connect our story to the local history in a charming, yet convincing way. Michal patiently walked through the local cemeteries with us and was often able to spot tombstones bearing some of the family surnames from the family tree printout I provided.

We had a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants and then Michal assisted us with train tickets for our trip to Bratislava. We are hoping that we can arrange another trip to Slovakia in the future to visit more of the cultural and historical sites in the eastern part of the country; we would gladly work with Michal again and encourage anyone interested in Slovakian travel or ancestral research to contact him – you won’t be disappointed!

Michal helped us research our Slovakia ancestors prior to our arrival helping us to add about 40 people to our family tree! He guided our almost three-day tour including a meeting with one of our living relatives and walked us down the streets our grandparents played as young children before emigrating to America. Michal was very thorough in his research and was able to act as our interpreter throughout the tour. We would definitely recommend him to anyone wishing to learn more about their Slovakian ancestry.

Michal Razus guided my husband and me around eastern Slovakia for 2.5 days (Sept. 11 - 13, 2022).  He met us at our hotel in Presov & drove us all around the region, including a visit to a Lemko museum over the Polish border.

We had two main interests.  1) All my ancestors are Carpatho-Rusyn/ Lemkos from villages in southeastern Poland--not Slovakia--so this trip was for me to see what Rusin & Eastern-Catholic culture is like south of Poland with no specific genealogical research needed. I have distant DNA matches in Slovakia but that wasn't our focus.  (In case I had wanted to explore my Lemko relatives in Poland, Michal recommended a Polish colleague of his & another in Ukraine when we asked about volunteering there.  I appreciated Michal's insight & willingness to sacrifice his own business when he knew something would be a better fit for me, the client.)

2)  We also love history so we wanted to visit castles & other historical sites, see wooden churches, & get to know about life in Slovakia In general, to be travelers.

I wasn't sure if we would interest Michal since we didn't require his genealogy skills exactly (more a tour guide who also knows about Rusin culture).  So I was happy that he could squeeze us into his busy Sept schedule just a month in advance.  When we asked about volunteering to help Ukraine, Michal even took us to a non-profit in Presov that sends supplies to Ukraine. We almost got to deliver supplies which would have been fascinating. (Alas, schedules changed on their part but hopefully we'll still be able to help them from afar.)

As others have reported, Michal was warm, helpful, professional, & knowledgeable.  He suggested great places when we were clueless (i.e. seeing a church with models of all the wooden churches for an overview; Lubanov Castle over Spis since the latter had lots of remodeling being done & the former was more informative). Michal also suggested local restaurants & lodging that suited our needs.

We never stopped asking him LOTS of questions about everything--Rusyns in history & modern culture, life in Slovakia, politics, sociology, food, religion, TV shows, you name it.  I think these discussions on-site and in the car were some of the highlights for me. Michal didn't just bridge the language & logistical challenges for us as tourists (and yes, those can pose challenges in Slovakia!), he made it all real and personal and rich.  We could never have learned so much on our own.  He was a teacher and a friend.  I was concerned that we wouldn't interest him because I didn't have family members for him to find in Slovakia. Yet while making genealogical connections for clients is a highlight for Michal, I got the feeling that he also enjoys good conversations about culture & identity in his country & for those connected to it through immigration.  We certainly experienced that in spades.

In short, we strongly recommend Michal as a guide and genealogist in Slovakia!

Michal Razus is a wonderful tour guide, interpreter, and a professional genealogist.
He is extremely knowledgable and is very friendly. We felt like he was a member of our family and we were at ease from the minute we met him.
Our trip to Slovakia to find family members would not have been possible without him.
He did such a wonderful job over 8 days with us. We met family, visited cemeteries , and searched town records and archives to find family that had passed on.
We also enjoyed our time visiting UNESCO sites and seeing the various towns between our ancestors home and Presov.
We always felt safe and very looked after by Michal. We consider him a lifelong friend and would recommend hm to anyone who is planning a trip to Slovakia.
