About
This recognizable fell is located in the village of Kilpisjarvi. You can climb to the top of the fell (1029m) along a trail which starts at the Kilpisjarvi tourist centre. Scrambling up to the top of Saana is a challenge worth doing. The longest set of stairs in Finland helps you at the steepest part of the four kilometer journey. From the top of the Saana you can see for miles!

Great trail and great views
Aug 2021 • Solo
This hike suits all types of hikers as the terrain is not challenging and the trail can be super easily followed all the way up to the top. The signs within short distances guide the way and the trail is in a great condition. I did this hike on a cloudy august day. It took an hour to get to the top without long breaks and with moderate speed. The views were stunning regardless of some foggy weather!

One of the best views in Finland
Jul 2021
One of the best views in Finland, with sweeping vistas across the border to Norway and Sweden. Quite steep ascent to makes sense to take your time and be well prepared for breaks and any inclement weather.

A place to remember
Jul 2021 • Couples
Unforgettable views on the way up and down, and on the top. Leaving early in the morning (6:30) was a wise decision on a hot summer day, even earlier start next time. Saana is stunning.

Easy and funk hiking trip
Jun 2021 • Family
Hiking up took ~80min with breaks and taking pictures of the scenery. Great day for hiking (~20C). Tracks was recently renewed and it was easy to follow the trail. Scenery was beautiful and took in total 2h 30min.

Everyone visiting Kilpisjärvi should climb to Saana
Jan 2021 • Couples
Number one thing to do in Kilpisjärvi. I can recommend both summer and winter climbs. Just remember to face the weather (seasonal, but it will be/feel colder up there) and wind (throughout the year).

Hike itself is not too long or difficult if you are in a "decent" shape. However, with small children or elderly people one should re-concider or at least prepare to spend more time for the climb.

Long hike
Aug 2020 • Family
The trail begins from a parking slot of Malla naturalpark. The trail was in very good condition for about the first couple of kilometers. From there the rest of the route was a gently sloping rocky "path". The "path" was marked with black sticks but basically you could walk where ever on the top of Saana. This phase of the climb seemed to be never ending but the hike was totally worth the scenery at the top of Saana.

To the highest mountain in Finland
Jul 2020 • Couples
It’s 4km one way so it takes about 2.5 hours to hike up to the peak. Downward will only take about 1.5 hours. At some point, it’s a pretty rough climb but amateur hikers can easily go up with patience. We saw many kids and dogs go all the way up.
It’s really cold and windy at the top so better take some jacket with you.

Good hike!
Aug 2019
Amazing views, good trail. The start point what we used was behind the Retkeilykeskus and the trail was in a good condition.

Nice trek, great views
Jul 2019 • Family
This is a bit of a hike, we went all the way to the top, which took us 2 hours up and 1,5 down. You need to be in a decent physical condition to be able to enjoy it. But the views are worth it!

MUST DO
May 2019 • Couples
I mean, if a fells - or a mountain, hill, etc - is there, I am hiking it to the top. Saana does NOT disappoint, and it's an iconic spot in Finland. This is a must do hike, and is not super challenging and even if you think it is, the views at the top and the sense of serenity and peace there make the journey worth all the while.
