Meet the Polar Bears
Mar 2019 • Couples
Booked an early morning meet the polar bears trip. When we arrived we were surprised and pleased to find we were the only two people, this meant we really did have a private viewing before the zoo opened. The polar bears were fabulous, enclosure excellant and our guide was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Climate change and human caused issues really highlighted! Even better we weren’t expecting the little sleigh ride or the additional experience of feeding the Artic fox. Went into the enclosure gave him his breakfast and it was just brilliant. A quick warm up in the restaurant, breakfast included then off Into the zoo to see the remaining animals. Excellant experience worth every penny and highly recommend. As an aside, the road from Rovaniemi was good, the weather was hard snow but the hire car handled it well so don’t be put off by the drive. Far better value to do it yourself than book transport.

Polar Bear Experience
Mar 2019
I am not normally a huge fan of Zoo’s, generally preferring to see animals in the wild or wildlife parks. But this place is different. The animals are mostly endanger and the breeding programmes are helping to maintain species. We were privileged to go on a private visit to see the magnificent Polar Bears. We drive from Rovaniemi in heavy snow and our guide was surprised but delighted when we arrived. Apparently many cancel at the sight of snow... it’s the Arctic! After a short sleigh ride towed behind a snow mobile we walked along a walk way to the Polar Bear compound. The mother and cub were the most amazing animals. Playful and fun but lethal. Our guide fed them (fruit - it was a fasting day) and they loved the apples and grapes! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and a great conversationalist. We then had a lovely surprise when we were taken to hand feed the adorable Arctic Fox inside its enclosure. After that we had breakfast in the restaurant and then headed to the main zoo to see the other amazing animals. I thoroughly recommend the private Polar Bear experience.

I personally don’t like zoos but this one is very nice. You can see a lot of artic animals, come very close to them.

It was interesting to see polar bears.

Would highly recommend

An opportunity to observe the animals of the region largely in their natural environment. The zoo convinces with a good concept. Especially in the winter period a special experience.

The park itself is beautiful, set right in the midst of the arctic forest. I have written a full review as part of my review of Gulo Gulo holiday park, but to recap that:

The selection of animals is really incredible, we were so surprised at the different species you can see here. All are well looked after in spacious enclosures, and many are rescued from the wild. We came here four days in a row (with entry included as part of our stay at Gulo Gulo) and loved it just as much, if not more, every time. Don't miss a drink in the igloo bar in the centre of the park!

Polar bears and chicken
Feb 2019 • Couples
Went to Ranua zoo this week. Large group of loud and rude Chinese tourists in front of us. They were throwing potatoes at some pigs to make them look up to make a picture. The zoo guide noticed but didn’t comment on it? Next we moved to the polar bears. Personnel started feeding them chicken! When I asked why feeding the chicken they said “oh it’s just a snack , they already had their main seafood this morning” yeah right. Have you ever seen a chicken on the pole? Won’t recommend to anyone

So I was on a honeymoon in Finland and Zoo is not a place you usually go when on honeymoon. But this was a place not to be missed. The sheer variety of animals on display here was amazing. More interesting still was how they were kept in their natural habitat. Loved the maintenance. The polar bear was given so much space. Also saw the Wolverine, so many different kinds of owls and eagles. We visited in super cold weather and they had facilities for hot chocolate or beer pittstops while visiting.

How to reach- we took a bus from Kairatie, Rovaneimi direct to Ranua zoo. Took 40 mints.

Lovely place
Jan 2019 • Couples
We visited the zoo on 21st January 2019. We were staying in Rovaniemi and before leaving for Lapland we booked our tickets to Ranua Zoo through their website and booked transport from our hotel to the zoo through "Yourbus Ay" also online. It wasn't cheap, bus transfer there and back for 2 people was €100.Tickets for the zoo cost €15 each which wasn't a bad price. A lot of places offer trips which includes zoo tickets and transport together but this is more expensive. Probably the cheapest way to do it is arrange your own transport (I think there is a local bus that goes there). It took about 90 minutes to get there from Rovaniemi.
So the day we went it was really really cold!! There is not many places while you are walking around to shelter from the cold so wrap up warm. The lady in the ticket office gave us wristbands and said as it was such a cold day we could go in and out as much as we wanted. We found an igloo selling hot chocolate about half way round which was well needed.
The zoo itself is lovely and set in beautiful surroundings. I know some people have moaned they didn't see many animals as it was cold and they stayed inside. I mean you can't predict whether the animals will be out or not so you take your chances. We saw lots of animals and were so excited to see the polar bears especially. The zoo was larger than we thought and I think it took about 2 hours to look around. We had lunch there after which was a buffet at a set price and food was ok, nothing special.
We recommend this zoo but make sure you wrap up warm and wear comfortable shoes.
