A wonderful combination of technology and art.
Displays showing the techniques developed over thousands of years right up to recent times, the step-by-step movement over centuries from hand work to machine mass production, as well as the ingenious development of hand-blown works of art.
There are four floors of exhibits, all worth a slow walk through, and a cafe (open Monday-Friday).

The Finnish glass museum in Riihimäki, just 45 minutes from Helsinki, tells about the history and stories of Finnish glass industry and glass design. In the museum there is also really nice art glass and unique exhibitions.
Next to the museum is the old Riihimäki glass factory area where you can find also two glass workshops and see the art of glassblowing.

We keep coming back. We are always fascinated by the history, the techniques and the end results. Be it tiny beads or heavy sculptures. Beautiful jewelry or tasteless junk. It is always a reflection of a culture. We seldom follow the videos, but the production of the Liber Mundi sculpture by the Finn Timo Sarpaneva and the Murano Studio Pino Signoretto had us spellbound.

The Glass Museum is easy to reach not far away from the Helsinki- Tampere motorway. Now, they have a special exhibition of world famous Oiva Toikka works. He was/is really known for his birds. The museum has also a nice history of glass and history of Finnish domestic and design glass. Going through the exhibition takes not more than 1,5 hours.

The Finnish Glass Museum is located in the town of Riihimäki, approximately 70 km. from Helsinki. The museum focuses on the history of glass dating back over 4,000 years and the 300-year history of Finland's glass industry. The permanent collections consist mostly of Finnish household, design and art glass from the 18th-21th centuries. Several temporary exhibitions are also held throughout the year. Check the museum’s website for current and future exhibitions.

When we visited the museum in the third week of August, the highlight was the temporary exhibition entitled “Kaj Franck – 100 years. Kaj Franck (1911-1989) was one of Finland's best-known designers of the 1950s. This exhibition at the Finnish Glass Museum presents a lesser known aspect of Kaj Franck as an eternal experimenter, skilled colourist, and free glass artist with the aid of a large private collection and unique, one-off art objects from the museum's own collection.

Anyone, who appreciates glass art, will enjoy visiting this pearl of a museum. I have never seen so much beauty and perfection collected in a single place.

The museum has also a café-restaurant serving a lunch buffet at a very reasonable price.
When you are in Riihimäki and have some time to spare, you can also visit other museums such as the Finnish Hunting Museum, which is right next to the Glass Museum and in the vicinity, the Riihimäki City Museum, the Riihimäki Art Museum, the National Signals Museum and the National Workers' Housing Museum.

Before you go, remember to check the opening times at the museum’s website. It is closed the whole month of January.

ちなみに、私は2012年12月にサントリー美術館(日本)で行なわれた「森と湖の国 フィンランドデザイン」で感動し、再びその作品を観にヘルシンキに来ました。
At the same time I was moved again,I wanted more people to see .

The compact yet comprehensive Finnish Glass Museum walks you through the history of glass-making and design glass in Finland.

In addition to the good permanent exhibition the museum always has changing exhibitions and contemporary glass art on display.

There is a nice cafe/restaurant at the museum and the museum shop sells beautiful glass items. Close to the museum there is also the "hyttikortteli" -area of the old Riihimäki glass factory, which is a very charming place.

If you want something else but glass, right next door to the glass museum is the Finnish Hunting Museum, which is very interesting to everyone who wants more information on Finnish nature and the history of hunting in Finland.

Finnish Glass Museum is located in Riihimäki. It is a half-hour walk from the city center.

The museum presents glass, glass art, and the glass industry and its history. The museum has a huge collection of glass objects.

The building is also unique. It is a former Riihimäki Glassworks factory which has been later transformed into a museum by the legendary Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala.

Location is not ideal for travelers on foot from Railway station but is a must see, if visiting Riihimäki. The collection is beautifully presented and the display has some very unique glass-art. Thoroughly recommended!
