Under Construction, but still interesting
Jul 2018 • Family
I came in hopes of seeing the massive Saint Christopher sculpture on the facade, but it was covered in scaffolding. Nevertheless, there was still plenty to see. MAKE SURE you sign up to TOUR THE CRYPT! The frescoes are superb.

Impressive Cathedral
Feb 2018 • Friends
The town was hit by the earthquake too and partially reconstructed. The Cathedral took its Gothic form back and holds a beautiful facade with statues, and impressive rose windows. The interior holds some ancient decorations still but most was unfortunately lost during the quake.

The courage after the earthquakes
Apr 2018 • Friends
In 1976 Gemona suffered 2 different strong earthquakes within 5 months, and because of them every building, among which the Cathedral and the tower bell, were heavily damaged.
The Gemonian with huge courage and fortitude decided to rebuild everything "how it was, where it was". Thanks to them, we can admire again the tower bell, the Gothic rose window, the Romanic gate, the internal slanting columns and the whole cathedral. Not to be missed, a wonderful - although mutilated - Crucifix, that is the best symbol of the Gemonian Renaissance

Uninspiring cathedral but a great story of restoration work
Sep 2017 • Friends
This church suffers badly by comparison with the results of the rebuilding of the nearby church in Venzone, which was also badly damaged by the two major earthquakes in 1976. That is inspiring, this one is surprisingly dull. The interior is gloomy and the style is depressingly gothic. The one exception is the front facade, which is full of fascinating architectural and sculptural features.

Historic town worth visiting
Dec 2016 • Family
This town has hit hard during the earthquake of 1976. Many of its historic walls, buildings and street were in ruins after the quake. We learned that stone mason's actually numbered the bricks for each building so that they could be removed from the site and then later restored to their original place. Several large posters hang in town telling the story of the renovation. A beautiful church, the Duomo de Gemona is worth the tour, along with a few shops selling lavendar gifts such as sachets, soaps, cookies and candy. We visited in the early evening and stopped in the Bar Ristorante Al Duomo and warmed up with the best hot chocolate I've ever had.

Amazing Medieval construction, worth a stop
Sep 2016 • Couples
Not only this cathedral is beautiful, but it has a dramatic recent history because of the destruction it endured during the 1976 earthquake that destroyed the area. If you like Gothic, you must stop here and visit, period!

Visit after museo della pieve
Dec 2015 • Family
While the Duomo itself is not the most inspiring of all of the churches I've seen, the brief history lesson I got at the Museo della pieve helped to put it into context and made it a far more interesting experience.
