This is a beautiful and very interesting building not only in its own design but its place in the development of contemporary Finnish architectural expression, identity, and international profile. Guide Mila knows the building, its stories, design relationship to other work of its time, and Finnish history providing incredible context to interested visitors. She generously responds to questions conveying her knowledge and her enthusiasm for the visitors' experience.

The museum is from the house where 3 famous Finnish architects did their work in the early part of the 1900s. Very interesting furniture and styles inside. The outside is also interesting and a great park setting. The tour relies on a guide, but it can be hard to follow the guide with a large group (and small rooms).

The Vittresk estate, built on the shore of the lake of the same name, not far from Helsinki, ideally embodied the ideas of the Art Nouveau era: urban comfort and fusion with nature. In 1901-1903, the young architects Saarinen, Gisellius and Lindgren created an estate imbued with creativity, their workshop was visited by Sibelius, Galen-Kallela, Mahler, Gorky. Today the main building is a museum; Lindgren's tower burned down many years ago. During construction, the authors deliberately used natural materials: pine logs and granite. Since 2016, Eliel Saarinen has remained the sole owner of the estate. The studio house is also interesting for its unique ceramic stoves, decorated with copper and iron, textile decorations with laconic geometric patterns, and objects of applied art. The place is truly very beautiful and fits perfectly into the natural landscape! Parking is problematic.

This is the home of one of Finland's most important architects. It takes a while to get to by train and bus, but worth the trip if you have the time. Amazing estate in the beautiful countryside, wonderful Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau buildings, mostly to myself in the height of the summer tourist season. Wonderful walks in woods, country lanes.

A must see if your into Finnish design. A beautiful house and museum set on the lake. Very detailed back store about 3 Finnish designers (Saarien, Lindgren, Gesellius) who used this as a summer house for inspiration. If the weather is nice - enjoy s stroll down by the lake. Getting there will mean either renting a car, or taking a train+taxi ride from the station (about 10 minutes) the small store at the train station will call you a cab for 1 Euro. The cab ride is about 15 Euro - ask for the desk at the museum to call a return cab when you are done.

Hvittrask is located outside of town a bit, but it is worth the visit. If you appreciate design, in particular, this should be on your hit list. It was one of the best things I saw during 3 days in the Helsinki area.
This was the home and studio of three renowned Finnish architects for parts of their lives. It was most famously inhabited Eliel Saarinen (father of Eero). It has since become government property and converted to a museum. The home is on a beautiful and immaculately preserved property. The gardens are lovely. The home itself is very interesting to walk through. You can appreciate the progressive design sensibilities of its notorious inhabitants in each room. The architects' actual studio space was one of my favorite spaces.
If you're up for it (and the weather is good!), there's a lake down behind the property that is open for a swim.

Contrary to the information provided by TripAdvisor, Hvitträsk is 30 km outside Helsinki, in Kirkkonummi, The complex was built to house the pioneering architect-partners Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen, who were responsible for many of the impressive art nouveau buildings in Helsinki and elsewhere in Finland. The Finnish variant of art nouveau, called the national romantic style, drew some of its inspiration from medieval castles and this shows up in the chunky and decorative design of Hvitträsk. In these surroundings, talented men changed the face of cities, boozed, and swapped wives. Don't miss the iron 'drinking rings' by the fireplace in the main room - it was said that if you could stay on your feet while holding onto one of these, you were not yet drunk.
The hilltop site offers some fine views of lakes and forest.

Architecture fans should definitely make the trip, especially if you're a Frank Lloyd Wright or Eero Saarinen fan or have any interest in Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau (e.g., if you love Barcelona). It was also nice to get out of Helsinki and into the beautiful Finnish countryside.
We took the train to Luoma (definitely no taxis there--barely a train station) and walked about a half hour on the country roads. It's uphill and there is no shoulder once you turn off the main road, but there are signs and not a lot of car traffic. There is both a cafe and a restaurant. Tip: It's worth watching the beginning of the video in the basement because it shows what it's like to arrive in the winter by horse.

Hvittrask is built above a lake; it's a compound of buildings first designed and occupied by three Finnish architects about a century ago. But it doesn't feel dated at all--it's as "modern" in its sensibility as the gleaming buildings of downtown Espoo, nearby. It's fascinating to see how the architects used Finnish styles and motifs, and how confidently they did so. They both lived and worked here, and I intensely envied them.
After touring the buildings, we had a delicious meal in the adjacent restaurant. A wedding had just taken place in the small formal garden, and the reception was going on in an adjacent room--the quietest wedding party I've ever heard!
If you can get out of Helsinki, especially on a sunny day, by all means visit Hvittrask.

We combined the museum visit with a cycling tour from Helsinki. You have a number of options to get there by bike, and you can have a different route for your return.
The museum is a wonderful example of the neo-national romantism style in architecture, and the surrounding nature is absolutely great on a sunny summer day.
There is a restaurant with à la carte lunch, and a small café with fresh cakes and salty snacks. For a lunch, you can also have a light meal in the café.
