My wife and I never miss visiting a garden on our many trips and this was no exception. The name O-Yaku-En translates to Medicinal Herb Garden and it was quite popular with daimyo in the 1700's. The garden has a very wide selection of herbs....More

I've been to quite a few daimyo gardens (Tokyo, Okayama, Kanazawa) and this is not as spectacular as Kenrokuen or Korakuen. However, on a hot summer day, it was delightfully peaceful and relatively cool. What distinguishes this one is its medicinal garden where ginseng and...More

Smaller than expected. Perhaps of most interest to those really interested in medicinal herbs. Skip if you have been to other Japanese gardens

Oyakuen Garden was a small but immaculately kept garden with a meditation pavilion as its center piece. It only took about 20 minutes to walk around but it was a nice peaceful walk having the place to myself.

Nice little garden, good layout and reasonably maintained. Not many there on our visit. Suffering from the long summer when we were here in October. Suspect it would be a little greener in late spring early summer. With the dearth of much else to do...More

Take your time, walk around the lake more than once and dream medidating in the pavilion in the center of the lake. This is a perfect addition to visiting the Tsuruga castle.

It was a sunny day, so perfect to wander around the small flower/herb garden. We ordered matcha and sat on the tatami looking out over the pond - the only two people there. It was idyllic.

Or, the Royal Garden of the Aizu Matsudaira. This traditional garden is also a botanical herb garden where medicinal herbs have been cultivated since the latter half of the 17th century.

An attractive, small provincial garden with an unusual herb section to the garden. Despite showing some signs of lack of maintenance this is a pleasant way to spend an hour or so while in Aziu.
