Over priced attraction, we even have to pay for towel rent.... No wonder there were just a few people visit this place when we were there.

The Hells Gate thermal hot springs are located just outside the greater Rotorua area. There are several bubbling areas, some filled with hot water, others filled with mud. The smell of hot sulphur pervades the reserve.

So we did this as a bit of a last minute thing one evening to wind down. The mud pools were great fun and we coated ourselves fully in the gloopy mud. However we couldn't get out and allow this to dry as it was...More

It was a very man made tourist area, more than I expected. I hadn't found anywhere else we could get our muddy fun pictures so thought it was a good option. It was pretty pricey and there isn't much to do except soak in the...More

Its was a lot more man made than I had expected. The mud pools were a bit of fun once you moved passed the point that they were a muddy pool. The hot water showers between the mud and sulphur were lovely, especially because we...More

You need to book in advance for the massage and private message and bath.
Hi TA mates, I'm looking to book a geothermal walk, mud bath and sulphur spa combo at Hell's Gate. I understand you can do the walk self-guided or with a guide (runs twice a day?). Can anyone advise which option might be best? And does the guided walk cost more/available in the combo package? I'm thinking the guided option might be very crowded and impersonal in November so may be best to take the self-guided option to avoid large crowds? The visit would be in November. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also we will be driving down from Pokeno (south of Auckland) that day so thinking it best to detour around Lake Rotorua to Hell's Gate before entering Rotorua for the night (with a motorhome). Would that be the most practical (assuming road north around Lake Rotorua is suitable for motorhomes?). Please forgive me if these are stupid questions - I've not visited Rotorua before:) CHeers, LIsa.
