About
Located in the heart of County Waterford & open year-round, the world-renowned Mount Congreve Gardens are a haven for plant & history lovers alike as well as for those simply looking to relax in nature. Boasting one of the largest private collections of plants globally & described as ‘A Great Garden of the World’ the entire collection features plants from every continent. Mount Congreve House, home to six generations of Congreves, was built in 1760 by the celebrated local architect John Roberts. Inspired by Mr Lionel de Rothschild’s exceptional garden at Exbury in Hampshire, works began on Mount Congreve's Garden in the 1950s by Garden Director Herman Dool. Ambrose Congreve's passion for his spectacular garden is still evident today. To make the most of your visit, we highly recommend taking a guided tour after which you can relax in the Stables Café where you will be served only the freshest of local produce, prepared & cooked daily.

We visited the cafe for breakfast on Sunday morning and it was such a lovely experience. The French Toast was excellent, slightly crunchy outside with a custardy creamy interior, the bacon was ample and the dining room was just so lovely. Other options include pastries, oatmeal, pancakes and traditional hot breakfasts. This is a hidden gem, worth the drive to have Sunday breakfast and a lovely way to recharge before starting the week.Dear Nomad66828669218, What a lovely review of our new cooked-to-order breakfast. We are delighted that you enjoyed it and also took the time to explore the gardens. - Caroline WWaterford, Ireland6 contributionsGreat afternoon teaWe booked afternoon tea in the tack room in Mount congreve. We couldn't fault one party of it. It happened to be one of their busiest weekends as they have a Halloween family day on and the stables cafe was buzzing with family getting lunch. The staff were prompt with delivering our afternoon tea and had time to tell us some of the history of the house and future plans for Mount congreve. The food was just delicious. Having the cliff take on the food was a great move for the establishment. We had to take home some of the cakes as it was so filling. We have a yearly membership to the gardens and cannot wait to renew it.Dear CarrieAWalsh, Thank you for your five-star review. Beautiful cafe to visit, exceptional food - freshly cooked and very high quality experience. Lovely location and ambiance, v friendly staff. Well priced given the quality. We will be back to visit the gardens. The John Roberts-designed house is a Baroque take on a Palladian pattern - a delight to see in any weather.Dear Niamh, Thank you for such a wonderful review. A friend who lives locally picked us up from the train station and drove us to Tramore and my wife’s great-grandfather’s former home, as well as other sites. She took us here for lunch. The flora was very nice, and the meal was delicious and inexpensive. The setting is very relaxing and we had time to walk to the river after we ate. It made for a memorable afternoon.Dear PatM402, Thank you for your lovely review. We are delighted you enjoyed your time with us and will pass on your compliments to the team. - Daydream875812 contributionsA must see for garden lovers!Mount Congreve gardens are simply stunning. Gorgeous plants, trees, birds and dragonflies! We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed beautiful sunshine on the day of our visit. There's a great playground on the red trail for children to play and have fun. The shop and restaurant are also lovely and the staff were excellent. When I mentioned that we were staying at Faithlegg House Hotel Karen in the Mount Congreve shop advised that hotel guests were entitled to free admission to the gardens. I was unaware of this and was about the ring the hotel to enquire but Karen arranged it all for me. She asked her marketing manager Emma to contact the hotel on my behalf and within minutes two complimentary passes were organised. It was five star customer service and greatly appreciated!Dear Daydream87581, It is a proud moment to read how both the Mount Congreve Gardens and FOXFORD team reacted to your needs. We are also delighted to work so closely with Faithlegg Hotel to deliver a memorable experience to those visiting Waterford city and county. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again soon.Written 8 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 June 2024

Beautiful gardens. These gardens are filled with hydrangeas. I feel like it is lacking some roses, but that’s personal. The walled gardens are filled with lots of colourful perennials and shrubs. The woodland walks are very plain (lacking colour). It’s mainly just old evergreens or natives and rhododendrons which are not in flower at the moment. The acers are amazing with a great selection. The garden centre at the entrance is quite pricey given that it is gardens, I would expect it to be cheaper then a garden centre

We visited the garden on a beautiful June afternoon which afforded us the opportunity to join the tour led by the main gardener who has worked at Mount Congreve for many years and was able to offer anecdotes and an insight into the originator and creator of the Garden. It is huge and did show signs of sinking under the massive task of upkeep, development and maintenance but nevertheless it was well worth the visit. I am not sure though that referring to it as one fo the top gardens of the world is fair or true. We booked this tour direct with Mount Congreve House some months in advance and can recommend for a leisurely visit. There are some outstanding views and the history is fascinating.

Dear Susan M,
We are delighted you enjoyed your tour with Senior Gardener Mr Mark Corcoran. You will be delighted to learn that we have just welcomed 16 students as part of our new School of Horticulture and they are tasked with the restoration of the Walled Gardens. We are thrilled with the progress they are making and we hope we can welcome you back at future date to see the fruits of their labour.

We were a group of nearly 30 members of the Carlow Active Retired on a day out to Waterford. We visited the wonderful Mount Congreve gardens and cafe. The staff were very helpful, the food in the cafe is wonderful and the gardens are a delight to the eye and sooth the soul. We all had a most enjoyable afternoon in Mount Congreve, with most members saying they would love to go back again.

Visited today with my family, we went into the cafe and gift shop we all had the breakfast stack it was absolutely gorgeous. It was made with quality produce. There is a great selection of food for all. Definitely well worth a visit. Considering how busy the cafe is, it’s surprising the gift shop takes up more floor space then the cafe shop. The price of gift shop was a little dear. The house was open since we were there last be lovely to see more rooms open.

My 3rd time to the gardens. The fist and second time visits to the gardens the entrance was beside the car park on the same level. As my knees are not the best at 70 years old this this suited me ideally! Now the entrance is up a hill and takes a good ten to 15minutes to reach the entrance to the gardens (past the lovely New cafe with shopping gift items) with knees like mine I do not think I will be visiting the gardens again as this entrance change is too much of a painful experience.

Dear Sightseer545160,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write to us.
You will be glad to read that there are plans in place for an additional car park which will be closer to the new visitor centre. It is however likely that this will not be in place until later this year.
We do currently offer parking at the house for anyone who requires it. For your return visit, please drive straight up the avenue and park in the allocated spaces.

Excellent pathways throughout the gardens, with something different around each corner. Not too steep in general, and a place you would want to visit several times throughout the Season, to appreciate the fantastic colours and plants / trees. Different lengths of walking tours to suit all. Excellent cafe / shop on site. Improvement would be more bench seating along the pathways, particularly on the longest walking route, to suit the very young and elderly.

All the works done in the garden recently add enormously to the visit; it was good to see the late autumn colours. We were particularly pleased with the newly surfaced pathways, which meant we could bring buggies right through the gardens. The shop and cafe offer a range of goods and goodies to satisfy people of good taste. All staff were doing their best to help , with the notable exception of the lady supervising the cafe who was unnecessarily snappish.

Booked for afternoon tea, as a family celebration for my birthday and coinciding with a visit from uk of our daughter and son in law. Made enquiries online about items shown on an up to date menu, which none of the four of us would eat, and enquired about possible substitutions. This was agreed. Further emails confirming all details sent and received. Came the day, we unfortunately did not receive the agreed substitutions, the chef had left for the day, nothing could be done. Huge disappointment, celebration somewhat spoiled. Other aspects of the afternoon tea were also disappointing, scones overcooked and really small, jam very runny, additional ingredient in sandwich, not advised. The waiting staff were extremely apologetic, nothing was their fault though, as we explained.
Fast forward, I paid in full, emailed the cafe manager, detailing the happenings, asking for explanation. Eventually we reached a conclusion, and I was offered a partial refund, which I accepted. It would appear that the communication lines between staff broke down, causing the issues which we encountered. Truthfully feel that Ireland do not "do" afternoon tea very well, could certainly learn from other countries. Value for money? Sorry, no. Table servers, polite, friendly. Overall, issue was resolved within days of complaint, so thumbs up there. Moral, if you will eat anything and do not care how much it costs, then you may enjoy the experience . Be prepared.

Dear juliemM856JI,
I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your afternoon tea experience. As you know there was a lot of correspondence on both sides to make changes to the menu to accommodate your requests. We are happy that you were able to resolve the matter with the Café Manager and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at a future date.

Hello, are the paths wheelchair accessible or suitable for a mobility scooter? Are they tarmaced as rough gravel is very difficult with a wheelchair/scooter?

I'd reckon 2 off the 3 paths would be flat surface suitable for mobility scooter

Hi, I would like to know if there is any plans for a Local Link bus to Mount Congreve or any other direct bus service? What about those of us who don't own a car, the only info on how to get there is by car on your website! I mean this is not right in 2023 when we are being urged to usie public transport. You have a page on sustainability but having everyone get there by car is very far from sustainable to be honest.

How do we get from Waterford out to the House and Gardens? What do people do besides drive or take a taxi? Maybe buses from town go out there. And can we tour the house as well on May 15, 2020 the date of our visit? Thanks

Mount Congreve ... W
Waterford, Ireland
Hello, thank you for getting in touch.
There are currently no direct bus routes to Mount Congreve Gardens. You could take a bus to Kilmeaden and then take the train from the Suir Valley Railway station, located just outside Kilmeaden, this stops at our rear gate.
We are also directly on the Waterford Greenway which is a cycle and walking track from Waterford City.
The House is not open for visits.
I hope this information is helpful.

Yes just a small one it does cakes and soup and a few pre prepared sandwiches and rolls but not extensive. Find it best to bring a picnic to enjoy in the gardens and have coffee and a cake after
