The geographical surroundings are incredible. The area looks as thiugh it us because of earlier mining, but it is real.
There are remains of a fortress on the top of the hill, before you turn off to the valley, and there is also the remains...More
Remarkable nature with river bed deep into terrain, small church at the top and rock monastery below where time has stopped. At footsteps small village with few good restaurants in local stile offering excellent local food. Exciting all year round. Recommended
If visiting Moldava, you should really visit this place. It is 45-minutes drive from Chisinau, good roads, and after arriving an 15-minutes walk up the hill. There a stunning views, there is history (old monastery & the cave monastery) and you can take nice pictures...More

Orheiul vechi aka Old Orhei is beautiful.
The church inside the cave was spectacular. So much history!
The view however was the winner.
A must for anyone wanting to see a piece of Moldavian history as well as Moldova itself.
This is the most famous of Moldova's cave monasteries. The monastery is actually part of a larger complex. Our tour group of 20 only visited the headquarter building and the cave. We were not taken to the cross.
The 13th century church was excavated from...More

You need to rent a car or someone with a car who knows the place well.

Agreed - baths can be seen from the road and the monastery is fine, which require walking but is easy access. If my mum had been there for the other areas (she's afraid of heights), she would not have managed, despite being physically fit. Getting to the caves requires walking a lot of mountain paths with no safety rails or steps. For anyone less fit or without good balance, it can be a bit dangerous. That danger would not translate well for someone with a fear of heights, as there is a distance to the ground for some of those areas. Would still be worth doing the tour and just letting the tour guide know I'd say. Old Orhei was my favourite part of Moldova.
