Of course, the ceramics are the best reason to go to this town. La Scala (the stairs) was incredible. Very nice place!

Not only is this town the capital of ceramics in the area, it is on a high plateau that offers lovely vistas of the countryside. The town administrators have brilliantly used the work of their ceramic artisans to decorate their city, from the risers of staircases that lead to their churches, to ceramics that decorate plaques of locations, and the... We enjoyed this town very much. The steps are wonderful and had a nice 2014 design when we walked up the 142 steps. Down near the bottom is a little outdoor restaurant connect to the tourist agency. The food was lousy so don't bother to go. They couldn't even melt the cheese on a panini!!! There's not a lot to... More

The city seems to have been a center of ceramic manufacture for centuries and most visitors -- like me -- will probably confine themselves to this feature of the city. The Ceramics Museum has an excellent collection of examples, some going back many centuries. Every kind of ceramic decoration or vessel seems to be on sale here. The streets and... More

We were lucky to be in Catania on August 15 when Caltagirone celebrates La Scala Illiminata, an absolutely awe inspiring festival when the town decorates the famous Scala staircase with colorful candles and everyone participates in lighting them up at 8PM. A beautiful sight that stays with you long after you;ve left.

Remember to not buy everything in the first shop you go into. There are so many great places on the stairs to buy pottery, take the time to shop around a little.

I only spent a day there but absolutely enjoyed the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and charming ceramics work that can be seen all over the town. The gardens are quite nice, the Stairs are worth the climb too. Apart from being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also a known skydiving spot, so there is really a little something for... More

The main street of town is full of shops selling local pottery. Prices and quality vary. We browsed through over a dozen shops before making any purchases. The pottery is vibrant with bright designs and ranges from cups and saucers to huge ornamental Saracen heads.

This was a nice day trip for pottery shopping and seeing the stairs. We traveled with our daughter and she enjoyed being out on the stairs shopping for trinkets and eating lots of gelato. We've been twice and still love it.

After driving round the outskirts trying to park we finally managed to park on the Via Circonvallazione di Levante which was even free!. From the car park it was quite a steep climb up multiple flights of steps through some rather "interesting" alleys until we found our way to the Piazza Umberto I and the cathedral which has an interesting...
