About
RSPB Loch Garten Nature Centre has recently undergone a major refurbishment & is now open for visitors to the end of August - the rest of the reserve is open all year round. Covid measures are in place for everyone's safety. Loch Garten is part of RSPB Abernethy reserve & the centre is in stunning Caledonian pineforest, a short walk from the shores of beautiful Loch Garten. Get close to red squirrels & small birds at our feeders & enjoy the forest, with activities for children, presentations on wildlife, updated interpretation & an enthusiastic team to help you make the most of your visit. The shop sells binoculars & telescopes, nature books, toys, hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, ice creams & snacks. Two beautiful woodland walks take you through magnificent pine forest to tranquil Loch Garten & Loch Mallachie - accessed from the Nature Centre car park & from the nearby Loch Mallachie car park. 2021 - no breeding ospreys at Loch Garten. Last entry to the Nature Centre is at 16:30.

Great trails for the family to enjoy.
May 2021 • Family
Lovely place. The staff inside the shop were welcoming and kind. The young lad who explained about animal skulls was super patient with the children. Lots of great tu information and nice nature trails. We went with our kids and grandparents. From the car park to the shop is a nice short trail, good path and lots of signs with info about local animals.

Disappointment
May 2021
Disappointed!! A great site now “upgraded” to be 75% retail....Covid seems to have claimed all binoculars....?! Use? Clean? Use??? Effort missing... Ospreys showing up or not is out with RSPB control of course but absence of other birds feeding because they have an issue with rats feeding on bird feed, sounds like no willingness to design innovative bird feeding stations. A great experience becomes a wet blanket. Such a shame.

A big tick in the box
May 2021
Although a keen "birder", I had never seen an Osprey so this was a visit to tick that box. Even though the visit was during the pandemic restrictions, the organisation and set-up was excellent. Staff were friendly, welcoming and very informative and we were lucky enough to spot the Osprey on the nest and also flying to and from a nearby tree. I had a powerful scope and was therefore able to get "up close" with my view from the centre, but even just with binoculars it was good. For those who have neither, the in-nest camera provides a live view of these amazing birds up-close. Lots of other things to see and do in the immediate vicinity including some great walks and lots of other wildlife - then of course there is the Loch itself which is beautiful in its own right.

Fabulous woodland centre
May 2021 • Couples
We came to see the osprey nest at the new centre but enjoyed so much more ! The staff are extremely welcoming, informative and helpful. Even if you don’t spot the osprey there is a lovely very family friendly accessible woodland path to explore which showcases the local flora, fauna and fairies ! Whilst we didn’t see the osprey we did see red squirrels and siskins and enjoyed a very peaceful and chilled wander through the enormous pines to the Loch. Great facility and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

More transparency over entry fee needed
May 2021
We queued for a while to get in, and were told by staff the queue was to sign in to comply with covid. Whilst we had no objection to paying to get in, there was nothing to say there was a fee, so after queuing to 'sign in' whilst getting asked lots of questions about why we weren't rspb members, we were surprised to be charged £5 each. We then had to queue again to get into the hide/shop/visitor centre, then queue again for one of the viewing spots. You really need good binoculars otherwise you can't see anything other than the distant nest. One of the ladies we spoke with was very helpful & informative. Greater transparency about entry fees would be useful, perhaps a notice where people queue stating entry price and membership price (as members get in free they might get more people to join this way).

Check first!! Phone ahead before you go
May 2021 • Family
We visited early last year and it was wonderful. Lots to do inside the centre, great help viewing the main platform, bird feeders inches away from you, both of us and our boys (7/13) loved it.
Forward-wind to today with great expectations from our boys, to say we were disappointed would be an understatement:
No binoculars/telescopes to enable you to view the ospreys
Nothing to do inside
No bird feeders

It was basically a glorified hide with a shop to extract more money from you after you’d paid full whack to get in!!

Will not be coming back anytime soon.

Although we did see an Osprey as we joined the A9 north to head home so not a complete waste of time.

One for the life list
Oct 2020
As we went in October we were outside the classic Osprey visit but during a long walk round the loch and area we managed to see the crested tit in close up around the feeders and managed a few photos.

Closed just now, but parking available for walking at loch Garten
Aug 2020 • Family
This is our second visit here. The RSPB centre is closed and also the amenities. The ospreys have not been seen this year. There is a Covid pandemic and suitable precautions are in place.
HOWEVER- do not despair. Park your car and enjoy a walk around the many paths at Loch Garten. Do some birdwatching, cycle or just soak in the scenery. This is still a glorious area with lots to see and do.
Enjoy.
