About
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric burial site, a complex made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. Earliest remains at the site date back to about 4000BC, and the complex was used over a span of many centuries, up to c. 2500 BC. The Hypogeum was first opened to the public in 1908. Due to its uniqueness, the site became very popular with visitors. Unfortunately, this had a negative impact on the delicate microclimate of the site. For this reason, a conservation project was conducted that also included the closure of the site for 10 years between 1990 and 2000. As a result of these studies, a new visiting system was established. Nowadays, only 10 visitors an hour are now allowed inside the Hypogeum for a maximum of 8 tours a day. This system is also complemented by an environmental control system which keeps temperature and humidity at required levels. Tickets for the Hypogeum should be purchased well in advance.

Magical place
Jul 2021 • Family
A must-have visit when in Malta. It is a magical please that transports you back in time. Very well organized with super friendly staff. We loved it! Just a hint, book it online weeks in advance or you’ll most probably end up paying 50% more on a last minute ticket directly there (if you’re lucky).

A mixed bag
Jul 2021
The Hypogeum itself is wondrous but we found the staff less so. They were bordering on surly. You are given an audio guide that plays automatically as you move round the small site.

Our guide did not seem to appreciate this and we spent a lot of time at one spot when we should have noved on. This got worse when she then got involved with her walkie talkie which kept going off but with deafening white noise, fiddled with her phone before disappearing and being replaced by someone else who could finally show us out.

I came away feeling that more could be made of the site, information wise but would have been happy with welcoming smiles - the lack was in stark contrast to other sites we have visited in Malta.

Don’t let Covid win!

Uniquely amazing - the extortionate pricing the only downside
Jul 2021
This was a truly unique and amazing site to experience. A 4-5000 years old, underground necropolis. Speaks volumes of the creativity, artistry and dare I say even intelligence of our prehistoric ancestors.

Hauntingly beautiful, a UNESCO World Heritage Site it would be a shame to leave Malta before visiting.

The only downside is its pricing. It has gone through large renovations was arguably saved by EEA half a decade ago. Now only 10 people are allowed in hourly - only 80 people a day. The price is €35 (!!) per person if bought in advance, €40 if bought last minutes.

It's manageable for a solo traveller, but it's a shame when visiting such a beautiful place is limited to the middle classes and not made available to everyone. A family of 5 would have to pay €115-120 all together.

I hate to end a review of such a magnificent place on a negative note, but compare the pricing to that of world-famous attraction/monuments:

Great Pyramid of Giza: €16
Collosseum: €12
Even he legendary Macchu Picchu: €32

One of the most expensive sites I know of, but that being said; A great experience for me.

Amazing prehistoric site
Jul 2021
Very well preserved pre-historic site. Yes its quite a short tour and you dont get to take pictures but that helps to preserve it for future generations.
It was amazing to see what humans were capable of building in 4000 BC and also the painting on the walls with red ochre up-close.
I definitely do not regret it.

Amazing Preservation
Jun 2021 • Friends
This site only allows 10 persons per hour to enter the hypogium to protect for future generations. We schedules weeks in advance to be sure we could tour. The presentation is unique and available with translation into appropriate language. The idea of no metal tools and only animal horns, rock & flint used to create such detail & lines in the stone over 5000 years ago is mind-boggling. No photographs are allied. Purses and belongings are locked up and no pictures f any kind are possible.

A unique place
Feb 2021
A very well organised tour of a unique place in Malta.

Definitely worth going, even for the locals, especially while the low touristic season continues.

More half-price events should be organised to encourage attendance.

Exceptional experience of prehistoric life!
Jan 2021
What an incredible place! We were lucky to find a spot around new year. Incredible history and the tour is very well done. The gift shop is cute and we bought a lot with vouchers afterwards. We are thinking of the visit now still days after. Was a great insight into prehistoric life. We walked from Valetta and it took around 1 hour. That was a different side of Malta to see! The village of Paola where the museum is, is charming.

Well worth a visit
Dec 2019
This was top of my list and so pleased we were able to do the tour. Fascinating history as it dates back to 2500 BC and for those spiritually inclined the Oracle Chamber.

Hypogeum is a scam!
Sep 2020 • Couples
This is a scam. 35 euro entry fee per person and for that money you are not even allowed to take a picture. Absolutely a no-go.

Not worth the price
Aug 2020
This is an interesting 50-min tour of an underground burial site, however it is not worth the extortionate price. Additionally, unless you book months in advance you will not get in as only ten people are allowed in per hour to protect the fragile environment. You have to leave all your belongings in a locker and are not allowed to take photos.
