Nice experience

A nice experience for a rainy day. Do go for one of the guided tours to get good information about the mine and its history.

Good experience, chilly but interesting
Jul 2019
There are guided tours in English. The geological exhibition by the Geological Survey of Finland shows what can be found underground, and of course also presents the history of Tytyri mine. You get a good impression of the daily life of the miners, and you can practice splitting blocks of limestone with a huge hammer, then take some home as souvenirs.

Chilling in the mine, Amorphis was the best!
Jul 2019 • Family
I visited Tytyri with a family of five with children between 8-13 years. It was hot sunny day, so we were a little lightly dressed for the coolness of the mine. You really need a jacket! Guided tour was alright. Our guide was quite slow at some parts of the tour. I was impressed of light and music show because they played my favorite band Amorphis! The light show could have more bright and showy!

A Cool Retreat From A Finnish Heatwave
Jul 2019 • Family
Be prepared for a cold experience - it's +8 C down there so dress warmly even if it's a hot summer's day on the surface. The operators can provide you with a blanket if you need one (and you can rent a warm jacket if necessary). You're also provided with a hard hat and taken down in a fast elevator as a group for the tour.

Some tours are available in English, but these are on Saturdays only I believe. Many of the exhibit signs though have good English translations alongside the Finnish text.

An interesting experience that starts with a fast elevator descent to the mine tunnels housing exhibits that illustrate the ice ridges left by the ice age across Southern Finland and the geological features that led to mines throughout Finland and this limestone mine in particular. The exhibits cover the equipment early miners used and the hazards they faced from day to day.

There are activities for kids, like mining for gems in a sandbox, smashing limestone with a hammer. The tour lasts at least 1.5 hours so kids might get bored towards the end, though the 'son et lumiere' show at the big cave at the end might stimulate.

Not very convenient to get to unless you are in the area, or have your own transport. There are public buses from Helsinki to Lohja - just check if there's anything suitable that matches their timetables with the timetables for the mine tours (they are at specific times during the day)

Pricey (16eur/adult) sponsored exhibition lacking excitement
Aug 2018 • Friends
The price is not 14€/adult but 16€ per person which given the « experience » is a high price to pay. It’s very much an advertisement for Kone and Nordkalk and with this in mind the pricetag is very hard to justify. Also hard to justify is you are advertised you can rent this space (a room underground) for your private events as you are guided through the place... hmmmm.

As to the experience itself, there is NO english tour, only some english signs that one doesn’t have time to read. And in all honesty there is not much interesting in the « mine » itself when you end up listening to some speech/lecture in Finnish in front of posters... It’s certainly not worth the trip from Helsinki.

Probably good for local school trips, otherwise do not bother really.

Fun experience for the whole family
Jul 2018 • Family
We escaped the heat to the mines today. I am originally from here and visited the mines 10 years back. But must say the new set up is way much better than what it used to be and offers something for the whole family. Our toddler was totally excited about the sand box and vehicles. He got bit scared of the last light & music display in the big cave (this year the music is powerful), but was fine when I went with him to the next area.
See their web page for the tour times.

Great underground experience.

The limestone mine in Tytyri is a very interesting experience. From the superfast elevator that brings you down to the mine, to the large halls and tunnels, to the big cave with light, music and echoes, everything is interesting. We had a competent guide who gave full explanations about the mine, the use of limestine and the history of the place.

A Mine Tour Is Different-Go to This One At Least Once
Oct 2017 • Friends
We were visiting the Helsinki area for a family event and went to this limestone mine tour as something different to do. Talking to the Helsinki locals, nobody had been here before, so why not go. Wear warm clothes as it is chilly enough to see your breath as the tour guide leads you around the different parts of the mine and explains the process of limestone mining and equipment. There were several areas that had specialty lighting displays that were different but my favorite was the last part where they had a lighting display with music of this HUGE cavern carved from the limestone rock. It is still a working mine although at lower levels than the tour and you don't see any of that. Note that we arranged for a 2pm midweek tour in English, normally they are done in Finnish at 5pm this time of year. We were the only three people there at this time, but although the cost per person is listed as 16EUR ea for the public tour, the minimum charge for a group tour is 100EUR. If you want something different to do in the Helsinki area that is about 45min from downtown and the locals have never been to before then this is it.

Tour at the mines
Jul 2017 • Family
You can go only in groups for the safety reason. There is cold +8 so it's cold an the tour is one hour long. Good shoes and something warm to wear 👍. The mine was inyeresting and there is changing exhibitions. Would stayed longer, the hour went so fast and though the was still things to see. The light show in the end is exellent!

Safe trip toward center of Earth
Jun 2017 • Couples
In comparison e.g. coal mine, this Tytyri Limestone mine perfectly safe place to visit subterranean atmosphere. First you pay your entrance and signup. Then you get safety helmet. Additionally there are blankets to keep you warm. So if you are reading this at home/hotel, go to your closet/suitcase and take that extra sweater and jeans with you. Good shoes are also recommended as visit starts with a walk to a elevator ride and then you walk around or uneven ground, some stairs too.
At mine you will see big "hall", the original area where the mine started, some 100m x 120m. Funnily they have set a real man sized doll somewhere to give idea of the size. You will see also some mining tools and machines.
Our tour guide Katri spoke also excellent English, but foreign guests had to pull the information out as she pushed the Finnish information. Maybe a small app with foreign text could be developed and downloaded for foreign guests.
At the end of tour all volunteers can try the life of miner by sledgehammering limestone. And everyone can have own piece of limestone as a souvenir. Cool.

Thank you for your nice review. It's true that our guided tours are in Finnish at the moment, but we're working on to have few in English also.
