One of the best hidden gems in Ireland. From the beautiful setting to the incredible food Gougane Barra is a 5 star experience. The dining in particular is second to none - amazing! The staff couldn’t be nicer and more welcoming. Would highly recommend to anyone for a nice getaway. We will be back!

A truly amazing place. So beautiful. A lovely place to wander and a great spot to grab a cuppa and some home cooked goodies.

This was my first time here in June 2022. The first thing that struck me was the fresh air, so clean and fresh. It is breathtaking. It is tucked away near the mountains between Bantry and Kenmare. We had the most wonderful walk here with amazing views and echoes . We were just blown away with the fresh air and view. This is such a special place.

Fantastic visit from Killarney. Only about a 50 min drive. Found out about this from some random local at the bar and it turned out to be a home run. Total Instagram worthy visuals! Hikes were great, the church was amazing and the overall experience was incredible.

Wasn't sure to what to expect when we decided to visit here. But so glad we did. Simply breathtaking, you get overcome with a real sense of calm and peacefulness especially if you get there early and you get the place to yourself. Lovely lady greeted us in the gift shop. Don't forget your bottle to collect some blessed Holy water from the Holy well and natural spring water.

This establishment is really a little but of heaven on earth. The location is perfect and this coupled with the professionalism of Neil Katy and their staff as they welcome their guests has to be seen /experienced to be believed. Amazingly perfect.

Highly recommend for wild & beautiful scenery tucked in a lush valley at the edge of the mountains! Think Virgin River with its sharp crags, high pine forests and panoramic views sweeping down the lake. Trails to suit all abilities. Spotless public toilets. Great signage and tree identification posts. An ideal location to park & picnic. We did a couple of trails but the “Slí na Sléibhe” (2.5kms, 2hrs, strenuous) is the most majestic of all the trails in the park – high into the mountains with spectacular views & highly recommend! Delighted to find where the majestic River Lee rises, flowing to Cork Harbour about 90Km away where we’ve been staying during our holiday. Steeped in history, the tiny island at the edge of the lake at the entrance to the Forest Park where Saint Finbarr, patron saint of Cork, founded his early Christian monastery in the 6th century.
You’ll need €5 in coins to pay on car park entry but we just parked along the route (without causing obstruction) and added another 700m to our lovely walk!

Great trails through the beautiful woods. Lovely way to spend a hot Sunday in a slightly less hot forest. Very accessible and well maintained.

GB is one of the five most intimate and enjoyable country hotels that we've ever booked. The family that runs it is very attentive, The lake vistas are charming. The restaurant serves delicious and locally-sourced foods. The hotel is within easy reach of the entire National Park with lots of trails and vistas (some get muddy in the rain). Query the hotel reception about dogs in the park. The southwest coast nearby is rugged and lovely, with far less traffic than the very popular Dingle Peninsula -and with far fewer tour buses smaller crowds. Perfect for an active dog. If it rains, Bantry (20 min drive) has a lovely mansion.

Noticed on Trip Advisor your review of Gougana Barre. Did you drive there? My husband and I are visiting Ireland this September, arriving in Shannon Airport, renting a car and driving down to Cobh. We then head up North through Killarney, Glasgow and Sligo. (Genealogy visits).
My sister visited Gaugana Barre a few years ago on a cruiseship tour. As we are from the states and are not very experienced in driving in Europe, we desire to only stay on major roadways. In your opinion, is the drive to this area hard to do? What was your experience driving on the roads through this area?

The roads around this area are narrow and far from what you would be used to. The best advice I could give to you is make sure you drive carefully and stay on the left hand side of the road. Gougane Barra is a beautiful place with nice walks and is where the River Lee (Cork) rises.
The drive to Killarney is about 75/80 minutes from Cork City and the drive is on the western side of Ireland to Galway and Sligo. Good roads for most of the journey. Make sure you give way to traffic coming from your right on roundabouts.
Enjoy your holiday.
