About
The origins of this fortified complex are still unknown. It is made up of buildings all dating from different periods and all belonging to the noble family of Sarriod from the thirteenth to the early nineteenth century. Some valuable wall paintings from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the period when the family reached the top of its political prestige, can be admired all along the visit. The "Heads Room", with its ceiling supported by 171 corbels carved into grotesque shapes, monsters and fantastic animals, is one of the original carving wooden late Gothic profane masterpieces.

Rude staff

Very rude staff, there were 3 people sitting there without mask and they said only one of us two could come in. They refused to give information in French or English.

Beautiful setting, no English tours
Sep 2019
I imagine this would be a very good castle to tour, however, for us it was inaccessible and they were not offering an English tour when we were there.

I'm sorry, We don't have a special guide for each language in the castle. You can visit the castle with a person who shows you the rooms, this service is included in the ticket price, but only in italian and french. Guided tours are supported by a tourist guide you can reserve calling the tourist office ( "lovevda" web site or "regione.vda.it" web site), and ask for the Language you need. kind regards Annalisa

A mysterious castle in continuous evolution
Aug 2019
To get to the castle we can find a large parking lot where to leave the car.
The castle is immersed in apple crops, between the Dora Baltea river and the town of Saint Pierre
The staff who accompanied us on the guided tour were nice and prepared, even with the children in the visiting group.
A castle evolving over time, different styles and expansions distinguishes it.
To see absolutely

This was a very short tour maybe 20 min max and it was guided. It only cost 3 euro and the guides are very knowledable about the castle and timeframes. Nice old history in the castle

They openly discourage (not refuse) non italian speakers or those with very basic italian, from joining the tour (which is only in italian)!

Small but very interesting. Tour only in Italian so not really as informative as it should have. Still very interesting frescos and all.

An hidden gem
Jul 2018 • Family
I have never visited or heard of this castle as there are so many more that are much more visible or famous.
We went here and we all enjoyed the visit very much.
The castle is intact in its latest form except of course it lacks all the furniture.
There are few paintings and decorations left but it has a very interesting history. From its creation to its development.
Beautiful paintings are visible in the chapel and in one of the external walls, an interesting general structure can be appreciated by visiting the castle in almost all its rooms.
Our tour guide was great! I loved the way she was talking about small and big details of the castle structure as well as the general history. She could answer all our questions and bring some funny details into the storytelling.
The best was of course to go into the room with the 171 faces carved into wood. An incredible masterpiece to admire possibly for hours and hours finding constantly new interesting details to admire in each face.
At the entrance we were met by a clerk was discouraged us to go in since we had kids and this is not certainly a fairytale castle but I still don't understand what was the big issue as the carved ceiling was very entertaining also for them.
I also enjoyed the fact that it felt almost like a private visit. Except us there was another couple and that made the visit very personal and relaxed.
The ticket is also very affordable. So nice when culture is so well served for everyone!

An interesting gem
Jul 2018 • Family
At first glance the castle seemed quite ugly compared to its Disnyesque Neighbor Saint Pierre. But as you approached it you grasped its purpose dominating the Dora Baltea river below and the road beside. Our guide Massimo knew his stuff as he trooped us about all the rooms. Sadly we did not get to see the battlements and other defensive features.

This castle is amazing and so was our tour guide, Massimo. It is very well preserved, it is like walking into the past.

Interesting History - Great Carved Ceiling
Feb 2014 • Family
An interesting little castle dating from the 12th Cent.

The Chapel has some fantastic (incomplete) frescos from the initial phase of the castle - and a later (complete) fresco of St Christopher.

The carved ceiling in the great hall is fantastic.

The tour is Italian - but the lady who led our tour was kind enough to translate everything into English.

The castle staff provide a full leaflet in English (French and German Versions Available as well) to support the tour.
