We had a 4 hour archaeology tour with Kate in August of 2021 and would highly recommend it. Kate was very easy to speak to in scheduling the tour itself, and highly accommodating of our general itinerary around the date of the tour. She has a wealth of knowledge and helped add so much colour to the lands that we were travelling through, helping us see the stories and history that we never would have discovered or appreciated without her guidance. She let us bring our dogs and was very courteous when asking if her dog could tag along as well (and all had great fun together).

I should start by saying we know nothing about archeology! Or maybe I should say we knew nothing about it. I found the tour researching possible days out for our budget family holiday to South Uist here on Trip advisor and was intrigued. We love walking and this seemed like a great opportunity to learn a little about where we were walking, but it did much more than that. I was a bit nervous that Kate, our guide would be super high brow and that we’d feel a bit stupid but she was absolutely lovely, very down to earth and we instantly felt at ease asking every question under the sun! She is a mine of information about so many related topics and the kids (my son aged 8 and twin daughters aged 11) happily chatted away to her and asked so many questions. It’s a great way to see parts of the island we wouldn’t normally see, but more importantly for us it really brought history to life. Wandering around a museum can be fun but actually seeing the remains of dwellings from thousands of years ago (which you’d usually pass without noticing!) and hearing how they built them and how they likely lived was just fascinating. Our kids regularly joining the dots with Horrible History books and episodes they’d watched was entertaining too. Our itinerary began at a Neolithic tomb, followed by a visit to a group of Late Bronze Age roundhouse where some mummies were found buried in floor. Then, following a tasty lunch at the Borrowdale hotel (with veggie / vegan options) we moved on to the remains of the broch at Dun Vulan, which is an Iron Age tower-like dwelling in a spectacular setting. The final stop was Howmore, which is the site of ruined early Christian monastery and as an added bonus it was surrounded by buzzing wildlife. We’re excited to use this knowledge on future walks and to learn more. Importantly for us, even the full day tour was very affordable (way less than a day at a fun fair or theme park for our family of 5) and we all agreed the highlight of our holiday and one we’ll never forget.

Kate gave our trip to the Hebrides a whole extra dimension. She is extremely knowledgable and an excellent guide. She not only shed light on the stone-age, bronze-age and iron-age history, but also has a detailed understanding of recent history and current society on the islands. The six of us in our group kept her talking so much that she wasn't able to eat her lunch (Sorry Kate!) Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in history, people and archeology.

A full day with Kate (and Mo) which was amazing !! She has a genuine passion for the area and archeology which was just fabulous to hear her talk about ! She was so happy to answer the daftest of questions - and was just a absolute pleasure to spend the day with her. She really was a local expert …… and if you want to spend the day with someone who lives and breathes her expertise - Kate is your person !

Kate McDonald, PhD archaeologist, guided us on a day long tour on S. Uist. We went to a Neolithic burial chamber, Iron Age round houses, Bronze Age broch, Viking settlement, and medieval chapel and burial ground. The tour was excellent. She gave us so much insightful information. It was especially interesting because she had worked on the excavation of the round houses. She is deeply involved in the preservation of archaeological sites on S. Uist and new discoveries. Highly recommended!
