Worth a stop
Aug 2019
Stopped at Skuon, as part of things you need to do as a tourist.
The fist thing that hits you is tha garlic smelling deep fried flesh, all along we were going to try a bug, spider or 'boiled egg' but once there we just couldn't bring ourselves to try the food on offer. Even the super fresh spiders
Some one must buy this food judging how much of it there was.

Stopped here on the way to Siem Reap. Lots of bugs (along with vegetables, fruits, etc) on display here. You can have fried tarantula, water bugs, crickets, grass hoppers, what have you. All fried so that the taste is no doubt destroyed.
They even have the little kids wandering around with spiders to temp/terrorize the visitor.
If it seems exploitative, it is. You are giving locals some money; it's also perhaps too tacky to be worth stopping. I'll skip this stop the next time around.

Not to everyone's taste, but an interesting local specialist market (it's name translates into Spiderville) for the essentials in life: a bio-break, a cold drink and a tasty snack. Tarantula, anyone ?

Huge bowls of varies sizes of cockroaches, scorpions, "flies", crickets and spiders - especially tarantulas. Mostly cooked in chilli oil (to deaden the taste buds ?). Most just rather crunchy - all those exoskeletons. I couldn't face the idea of large, chewy tarantulas, though.

Salutory to think about why the Cambodians have taken to eating these critters though. As with China, starvation developed the need .....

Stopped here while on the way to Kampong Cham. Basically it’s just an open market with vendors selling drinks, deep fried spiders/worms etc, freshly cut fruits.

For the tourists
Jan 2019 • Friends
$1 to hold a spider with fangs removed
$1 a pineapple
In fact $1 for anything
However the cafe undercover is cheaper than the traders and the coffee is the best I had in Cambodia, so go there and avoid the tour buses

Pit stop
May 2017
Roasting, dirty market. Felt v hassled by people looking to sell tat. It's fine to stop and look at all the variety of insects on offer. Spiders were all gone on the day. Would not return-just not my thing. It's a roadside market/petrol station.

A place to fight (against) my arachnophobia

First to mention is, that the spider market is NOT at the Skun Market. Why did nobody mention thet before? We found one larger market approx. 4km away from Skun Market in direction to Phnom Penh. There is a restaurant called Restaurant 88 and a lot off insects and spider offerings surrounding it. We rented a scooter to get therefrom Kampong Cham. The street is nice and you can go for 70-80km/h all the way.

We did it and ate a spider. It was rather tasty :D

We really liked the visit. It's funny to see the kids play with living tarantulas as if they were cute hamsters.
