Houghton Hall was built in the 1720s for Britain's First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. A beautiful example of Palladian architecture with interiors by William Kent. Currently, Houghton Hall is home to the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, Walpole's descendant, and his family. Situated in traditional parkland, the house is surrounded by white fallow and other exotic deer. There is an award-winning five-acre Walled Garden which includes a spectacular double-sided herbaceous border, a kitchen garden with arches and espaliers of apples and pears as well as a formal rose parterre. An impressive collection of contemporary sculptures and works by world-renowned artists such as Richard Long, Anya Gallaccio, Zhan Wang, Stephen Cox, Jeppe Hein, Rachel Whiteread and Phillip King are displayed in the grounds. There is a model soldier museum, a gift shop, a fully licensed cafe and picnic area and playground.

This estate has the most stunning gardens especially the walled garden. Also the sculptures in the grounds are amazing. The hall is ok but I find it a bit dark. The cafe is good for a coffee and cake. Well worth a visit for lovely walks.

A beautiful estate. An amazing walled garden with an incredible fountain called Flame. I am intending to return next year and complete my visit, as i went somewhere else first and spent so much time here and still i didn't see everything. Had good weather and sat outside for lunch. The house and stables were interesting, along with the model... More

This is a truly fantastic English stately house & walled garden. The house & contents are jaw droppingly impressive & the staff welcoming & extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much about Walpole, the original owner of the estate. We discovered it completely by accident on our way home from Sandrihan, the queen's winter residence, due to a road sign. It... We have visited the gardens many times . Luckily we are fairly local and tend to use Houghton when entertaining friends. We have only been in the house once. To be honest there is so much to enjoy within the grounds that by the time we stop for a bite to eat we tend to run short on time to... More

Haven't been to Houghton Hall in years and was impressed. We didn't bother with the hall as had been round it before. Enjoyed the stables though and the gardens. Nice to find the little church open as well. Called in at the café and had a pot of tea for two which we thought reasonably priced.

Let's start by saying they sell the best sausage rolls ever. Wonderful walled garden and acres of parkland with white fallow deer and others. House magnificent palladian and home of Robert Walpole, first prime minister. Interior of house brimming with ostentatious wealth and must have been over the top even in Walpole's day. Wonderful sculptures scattered about (can we have... More

Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted to hear you appreciated Sir Robert Walpole's taste in interiors and share the current Lord Cholmondeley's love of contemporary sculpture. Lastly, and perhaps, most importantly, we are extremely pleased to hear you enjoyed the sausage rolls! More

I've been a bit put off writing comments about places recently because I picked up a nasty habit of reading previous reviews to see if I had anything useful to add. Mostly I don't but in relation to a recent posting and in defence of Houghton my thoughts are fully supportive of what has been achieved there. Forget ridiculous concerns... More

We overheard a chance remark which led us to visit this lovely house. We have visited the area many times but had not seen any adverts for the hall before. A house still lived in by the owners it has a lovely feel to it, had tea and cake in the cafe, very good. It also has a nice gift... More
