Worth the visit
Aug 2020 • Family
This museum is a little gem and a must-see for all families who are visiting the region. We went with our four-year old and he loved seeing the great variety of impressive steam trains on display. Seems the museum (a former train shed with turntable) has been refurbished only recently, everything looked neat, clean and brand new. The guiding system was easy to get, all info is in bi-lingual German/English, all exhibits really well lit. There are multi-media interactive displays, and you can choose if you want the info to be simple (for kids) or more complex (for adults). We are no train experts so can’t really judge on the selection of exhibits but you get a great idea about the golden times of steam engines. Model train set wasn’t working unfortunately and we wished there would be a playground or similar where kids could play with trains or pretend to be train drivers. Otherwise a great place to visit and a morning well spent.

Superb working museum

This is situated north of Nuremburg & right a the top of Bavaria. It is at the southern end of the 'Schiefen Ebene' which is a 8km long 1:40 hill. There are over 30 steam engines on display, many still working. It is situated around a 15 road roundhouse, but it is spread out over a large area. One notable exhibit is a coach used by Hitler & his cronies. Lovely museum & right next to the DB station.

Superb exhibits and infomration on German steam
May 2016 • Couples
We were very pleased with our visit to this attraction. For a moderate entry fee you get to walk through the nicely restored roundhouse and view several German steam locomotives and learn about the history of steam trains in Germany. See the steam trains rise in size and get up close and personal with some real granddaddies from the 1920s up to the last produced steam train from the 1950s. Signage is in German and English - thank you. There's also an outdoor exhibition of equally impressive rollingstock. This attraction is highly recommended for stem train buffs.

Very informative museum with large exhibit, excellent interactive screens

We were here with friends who had a five year old boy, and he loved it. We were there in November and it was quite cold where the locomotives are presented, but still an enjoyable visit. The interactive computer screens are excellent. You can see how the steam engine works and to "operate" a locomotive including blowing the steam whistle. There is a model train exhibit as well. In warmer seasons, there is also a small kiddie train that goes around the property.

A functioning Museum

Want to see real steam engines? These machines are still operational today! Take a walk through the round house, and even under a train. Ride a small gauge train around or take a trip on a steam engine, contact the museum for details.

You can take the DB train to the station, it's a short walk.

Good for families, kids, strollers were pretty easy to use.

Souvenirs are priced well.

Excellent museum

Very good museum. A must see if you are in the region. Try to be there when they have trips with the steam locomotives up and down the Schiefe Ebene. When there is an event - worth the trip to Germany in itself. When there is not an event - worth a day-trip
