Yes, it is a zoo, but really, this one is quite well done. Even if you ignore the whole Irwin thing (don't). Despite the crowds when we went through, it didnt feel crowded as we went through. We spent about 5 hours there.

We only purchased a one day pass so if you go when park opens a one day pass should be okay.

Try Airbnb. We stayed in a lovely unit in Little Mountain with a pool. 15mins drive to the zoo.
