My family owned the burg 300+ years ago for three generations. Some of the towns people came out to greet us when they found out former owners were there. Everyone was so nice. We had a translator/ guide so that was helpful. We spoke no German and them no English.

Great view from the tower. Make sure you go to the nearby church. It was my family’s church and some are still buried inside. They were the Von Bouwinghausen. Americanized to Buvinghausen.

Toller Ausblick. A must visit when in Zavelstein. Cute little village, the tower offers great views over the black forest.

Quant Castle near Calw

I loved this castle ruin. It was the easiest to get too and offers a lot of hiking trails in the direct vicinity. Enough remains to get an idea of how it looked and having to walk through the town to get to is is charming.

Small but pretty
Jul 2019 • Family
My parents and I hiked around the area and decided to visit Burg Zavelstein as well. It isn't very large, but it is free, so no complaints here. For a small fee (0.50 euros) you can climb the tower, the view is certainly worth it.

The town nearby is small, but nice too, and the area is great to walk in. Benches everywhere if you want a rest from your hike (or just want to appreciate the view!)

This is a great castle situated directly at the historic center of Zavelstein. Avery nice place to walk around and just hang around with family and friends, I find it excellent for photo shootings too

Worth to visit

300 m from city centre and from Berlins hotel is this very nice and reserved ruine.
We have visited at evening, nicely lightened. Within day is worth to go around and climb on the tower.
View is beautiful.

Well worth a detour

A very picturesque ruin in Northern Black Forest. Climb the tower for stupendous views of the surroundings, or just explore medieval castle architecture (quite a bit is still there) And the old buildings next to the castle, known as the Städtle ("little town" in Swabian), are also pretty nice.

It's free except for the tower (50 cents if you want to climb it - it's the honor system, just deposit the money in the box provided next to the stairs)

Note that there is a sign prohibiting picnics without express permission from the city. I don't know if they enforce it, but it's there.

Walking through a mideval street we arrived at this ruin, where ate the moment we arrived an open air movie was shown. We walked around and had wonderful views on the old walls.

Little gem on top of the hill

If you hike the Bad Teinach - Zavelstein area in the Schwarzwald, don't miss out on stopping at the ruins of the Burg Zavelstein. It is a well maintained ikon of times long passed and invites to stop for your pique-nique. The best part must be the Kindergarten playground in the old moat of the castle. How much better can it get for a playground!? Unfortunately we were to old to play there ;-(
