Interesting historical visit.

An inexpensive and fascinating trip to the 11th century. There is so much to see in the Dordogne, but few are as personalized and intimate a setting. It’s worth the time.

Thank you so much for your comment. We are delighted you enjoyed the tour. We find the site really unusual as it's underground at the very heart of the village but hidden away so you can be oblivious of what happened many years ago there and how people lived in Belvès and how very different from nowadays their life was...unless you go to the Tourist Office and ask to do a guided tour in English. There are guided tours in English all year long.

My son is mad about the past, so wanted to visit the caves whilst on holiday.
We went to the tourist office to book the tickets, and informed that the English tour was at 1230, but we were happy to wait.
The tour guide collected us from outside, and she was excellent. Her English was good, and her knowledge was equally brilliant.
There were lots of questions asked, and every one of the were answered.
We all found the narrative fascinating and really enjoyed the experience. The whole tour took about 45 mins, but was well worth the entry of about £15 for our family of 3.

Great way to kill an hour

We went to the town of Belves to the market. It started raining so we looked for something to do. Went to the caves which gave a great insight to how life must of been hundreds of years ago. Kids enjoyed it and what really made it was the guide and his way of weaving the facts into a great narration.
Worth it!

Fascinating insight to how the poorest people made underground homes
Jun 2019 • Couples
We chose to travel to Belves in order to visit this attraction to avoid the fierce heat outside as the temperature topped 38c. It gave a somewhat sombre but fascinating insight into how the poorest people survived and made do building and then inhabiting these cave rooms built in a ditch from the middle ages through to the 18th century. It was an excellent 45 minute tour with an englsh speaking guide which costs just 6.50 Euros each. Note that only a few tours each day are English speaking so it's worth calling the tourist information office ahead to check times. Tickets are purchased from the tourist information office. It was quite cool underground, but not as cold as in any of the caves we visited in the Dordogne and I was comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt.

What a treat to see how the troglodytes lived
May 2019 • Couples
It was a little creepy and sad but it is part of history to see how the poorest people lived in caves under the ground in the 13th through 18th centuries in Belves. There are some surprising tools used by the inhabitants. We got to see 8 cave homes-a must do!

More than it seems

The caves were more extensive than expected with several rooms. Not much to see as furnishings, but a few artifacts. Good place to go on a hot day.

Thank you very much for your comment. You're right, cool when it's hot and sheltered when it's raining, and a must see if you visit the village of Belvès...as they are the only original natural cave dwellings in the Dordogne to be at the heart of a village underground! They are open all year round and the guided tour in English at the moment (departure for 4 people minimum) is at 11.30am. It's preferable to book ahead as there is a maximum of 18 viisitors per visit which lasts for 45min.

Amazing to think these ancient dwellings are under the modern town square. Very informative tour given by the Guide Olivier. Certainly would recommend a visit to see an unusual attraction - and a good way to get out of the middle of the day heat !
