Beautiful location

It is always amazing to visit these historical locations - the beauty of the "old" hill towns is just spectacular

Nice but not really amazing

Nice old town, but similar to other Italian villages. Some bridges and ancient walls are nice, you can have a Cappuccino at every corner, and most likely it’s more lively with warmer weather.

Nothing special and being renovated
Jun 2016 • Solo
Probably because I have been in about 10 amazing Tuscany sides during this weekend, I am a bit critical with Castelnuovo but in my opinion is not worth the drive from Lucca. This small tower is small and in top of that it was been renovated.

charming old town
Apr 2016 • Couples
A charming, historical town, under renovation during our visit, and I believed largely rebuilt following damage in WWII. However, charming layout and less busy than other main tourist towns. Thursday morning has a clothes and utensils type market

Relaxing with no tourists crowds.

Although Castelnuovo is not a major tourist destination we found it pleasant and relaxing to be able to walk the none crowded streets and eat in local restaurants. The town gates are impressive as is the whole town and there are plenty good small shops in the town. We stayed nearby in San Romano and often visited Castelnuovo. On Sundays the cheese rolling competition starts at this port and the whole town comes out to watch. It is a must experience event. We loved Castelnuovo.

The epicentre of Castelnuovo
Jul 2015 • Family
Having passed through this fortress literally thousands of times since childhood it's not just the hub of the town where streets, people and everyday life intersects, It's also a beacon that's as relevant today as it was centuries ago. From the piazza, take a right or possibly a left, walk up or down because there are no wrong turns if it's a day's shopping mingled with sightseeing that you have in mind. Thursdays are additionally engaging with the morning market that's been an institution in Castelnuovo for decades as locals (and visitors) shoot the breeze or seek out bargains. Then when you need to rest your weary feet, settle down in one the nearby cafes and savour all that Garfagnana has to offer in one delightful package.
