A couple of friends booked a trek with Ah Bao Ge, who is one of the experienced and licensed (important for insurance) guides for the mountain. This included a car ride from Lijiang. Along the way you will pass Tiger Leaping Gorge which is quite a sight by itself. Nearing the base village, normally you can see one of the... More

Didn't actually climb it... But really enjoyed the views of it when we drove into Hapa (from Tiger leaping gorge) and when we left it on the way to Shangrila. It truly was a spectacular view of the mountain descending into the village and the valley floor.

We saw it from about 10 miles away so I blame that on the tour company not on the locals or the Chinese government. We saw a lot of beautiful cloud shrouded mountains and did some horse back riding in a beautiful valley.

IMPORTANT - Hiring a guide is a must. Especially for the black lake hike. We saw no a signposts in sight and there are infinitely many routes in the area. Talk to them to find the right one for you. Don't overexert or be overly ambitious. - High risk of altitude sickness. Prior to the hike, I stayed near Lijiang... More

The site was beautiful, although a bit overcast on the day we were there. An amazingly beautiful site with lots of "red coats" snaking along and up the mountain. But, worth the climb if you can make it. Coats and portable oxygen tanks are available for a price. Everyone she take a peak if in the area as it is... More

We went up the first cablecar to the intermediate valley where Tibetans herders live in basic summer houses with their yaks and cattle until it gets to cold, when they retreat to the valley below. You can walk around this high valley and talk to the locals, visit their houses and pay a lot for yak butter tea! It's terrible!... More
