These ruins are relatively unknown and are very well preserved and set in beautiful surrounds. The site is a small pukara similar to the Quilmes ruins and was an important strategic point for protecting the mountain pass from Tafi del Valle before entering the Valle Calchaqui. The site's name comes from the "cardones" or thistles (Trichocereus pasacana) that make up the abundant vegetation that grows there. Some of these are as tall if not taller than those at the Los Cardones National Park in Salta.

We travelled with Peregrino tours - organised by our hotel. Pickup was around 7.30 and we got back to the hotel around 6. Travelled from Salta to Cachi - over The Andes and through the Nacional Parque. It was all absolutely stunning. This was the absolute highlight of our trip so far. Once in Cachi, we are a huge meal... More

It is a very varied scenery, and you will be surprized by the ever changing shapes and colours displayed. There is nothing else than the scenery though, so you would do well to bring with you what you need to eat or drink. Toilets are nonexistent.

The Parc Nacional Los Cardones is named after the large cactus or cardones which the park was set up to protect. As these cardones grow very slowly, typically 1 to 5 cms each year you know that you are in the presence of some very old flora. There is a short marked walk, too short really as it is only... More

The trip to Cachi from Salta takes you through The national park full of cacti and llamas. We had a clear day and stopped numerous times for photo ops. The vastness of the land of Salta province is seen so clearly on this drive and we will remember it for a long time. Maybe until the next time we encounter... More

This is one of the most amazing places in the world to see It's rugged and roads and not great and many are gravel or dirt or both. Our biggest mistake was renting a small car, you really need a 4 x 4 to be able to appreciate the place better and enjoy the ride. Be careful since sometimes when... More

The Parque Nacional Los Cardones is usually visited on a day Trip from Salta that goes to the lovely town of Cachi and back. Cachi is a lovely little traditionnal town, but the main attraction is the road from Salta to there. You'll not go that high, as the maximal elevation is 3300 m above sea level, and you will... On the way from Salta to Cachi, you drive through this park. It is mostly flat, home to animals and to the cardoon cactus. Not a whole lot to see, and wildlife sightings as always depend on your luck, but a quick stop at a short 200-meter trail to read the signs in Spanish and English explaining about cardoons was...
